I'm still kind of working on the flavor text, but I thought I'd go ahead and put this out there for discussion. I'm not completely devoted to the name, but Prestidigitator was too much of a mouthful and Trickster was too bland. Also, I'd like suggestions on the unnamed ability; I just couldn't find anything I liked for it.

Additionally, I was thinking about adding Iron Will as a pre-req. Too much?

At first, it seems like a little too much. Spells plus all the abilities, but when you balance it with giving up sneak attack progression and high level special abilities I feel like it might not be too much. Certainly Rook's are going to be less able in combat, but perhaps more proficient in social and stealth situations.

Rook

"But Gotho killed you!" - Master Ryol, a noble deceived by a Rook's illusions.

Some people have a knack for deception. Some people have an innate talent with the arcane arts. Occasionally, a person has both and that person often becomes a Rook. Rooks are tricksters, thieves and assassins who add magical illusions to their repertoire.

Most Rooks are bards or rogues who have already shown an interest in magical devices and noble intrigues. Most continue to swindle the nobility, often playing one against the other for their own benefit.

It seems to me that your unnamed ability is the art of the magician, basically covering up, usually with distraction, how one acheives his illusions. Name Ideas:

Arcane Sleight of Hand
Art of Distraction
Elusive Casting or maybe Illusive Casting
Subliminal Casting - (possibly change the description to something like observers fail to notice the casting).
Subtler Spell

Rook seems a pretty good name. Knave could work also. Loki, in honor of the Norse god of mischief, has a kind of Athasian ring to it although it wouldn't be wholly original.

Hmm, this reminds me of the old saying "The hand is quicker than the eye."

I think something like "Quicker than the eye" would work nicely.

Edit -- Of course that leaves you two "eye" abilities right in a row... I'll keep thinking about it

You're Rook went from a one-eyed jack to a two-eyed jack. Reminds me of playing poker.
