Well, they would use Linen made of Flax (or hemp), leather, burlap, and canvas...is that all they would use though. Do they grow cotton in athas? Would they have made Denim to replace padded armor due to the HOT temperatures?

Cotton is, at least, grown in the Tyr Valley according to The City-State of Tyr, IIRC.

Veilled Alliance says Balic imports expensive linen from Draj to make up the cloaks which are worn by the Patricians.

Dune Trader says that hemp is one of Draj's two major exports. Of course, the tables in the rear of the book seem to imply that this is for hemp rope. Here are the Dune Trader's table results for commodities related to fabric and clothing.
  • Dune Trader's tables show that Raam and Tyr are oversupplied with cotton.
  • Gulg is oversupplied in common cloth.
  • Draj is oversupplied in fine cloth.
  • Draj, Raam, and Urik are oversupplied in rich cloth.
  • Draj and Gulg are oversupplied in clothing.
  • Raam and Urik are oversupplied in furs.
  • Balic and Draj are oversupplied in leather.
  • Balic, Raam, Tyr, and Urik are oversupplied in silk.
  • Lastly, for completeness, Nibenay is oversupplied in chitin.

And as we know from most of the Dark Sun art, there is a whole lot of leather and chitin being worn out there... ;)

Hemp is probably the cheapest. It's what the slaves start in in A Little Knowledge. Probably any natural fibers would be available. More extravagant materials like satin and silk would belong to the rich.

If there is a wool equivalent, then likely there is felt, which is the oldest cloth known to man.

hmmmh. what about silk or something like bark cloth (maybe what they wear in gulg)? i have worked with bark cloth before and, depending on the quality and strength, it behaves a bit like leather or canvas. otherwise you can make cloth out of almost anything e.g. there is banana fibre, coconut fibre, pineapple fibre, nettle fibre - so why not cacti fibre/'bark'? the skin of certain desert plants/cacti could be very thick and leathery and could be kept soft by oiling etc. or there could be something like spider silk (the dream of the textile industry - they even try to implant spider genes in cotton or silk worms i think) or viscose - which could be produced through either alchemy or in a mysterious sorcererking/-queen owned plant ;)
also, sequins could be made out of beetle carapaces. otherwise: the halflings of the jagged cliffs area have got some freaky colour-changing garments!
alternatively you could think up and animal or plant that provides a certain type of fibre :D

Introduce?! Halflings have been doing this for centuries! Those little guys have been making everyone else fashion "victims" (*ahem*) for a long time.

ah, fashion is no matter of humour... but maybe there lies the explanation for the athasian malaise:

'Fashion makes fools of some, sinners of others and slaves of all.....' -- Josh Billings 1818-1885
