Um, am I the first to notice this?

So they are making an animated Dragonlance film.

THE FILM
The Dragonlance movie will be an animated adaptation of Dragons of Autumn Twilight, using a combination of 2d/3d animation styles. According to Dragonlance-Movie.com, 'The film is being produced by Toonz Animation, Commotion Pictures and Epic Level Entertainment, with conceptual artwork from Kunoichi and others. Paramount Pictures will be looking after worldwide distribution.'

CAST
Tanis Half-Elven: Michael Rosenbaum
Goldmoon: Lucy Lawless
Tasslehoff Burrfoot: Jason Marsden

CREW
Director: Will Meugniot
Screenwriter: George Strayton
Creative Consultants: Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman
Producing Team: Steve Stabler, Cindi Rice, John Frank Rosenblum, Arthur Cohen

Is all this stuff circulating around imdb.com, Dragonlance-movie.com, and other places just an elaborate conspiracy that I have pathetically started believing in?

edit: Oh, and Keifer Sutherland is supposedly the voice of Raistlin.

No, you're really not the first to notice this.

As soon as I heard Lucy Lawless was in the cast, I thought , another crappy animated movie.

If Kiefer Sutherland's in it though, it gains some credibility; at least in my eyes.

But honestly, what's the scoop? Why can't a real (and by real, I mean live action) DL movie get made? Is the story not good enough? Doesn't make a good screenplay? What?

I know the Chronicles are too long to make into one movie, but you'd think Autumn would have been made by now...

Why would you say that? Did they already finished the vocal recording? The animation is all done, just have to sync the mouth to the voice-over?

I think the reverse is usually what happens. Storyboards are created, voice tracks are recorded, animation is keyed to vocal track based on storyboards.

Yep, that's the typical process.

Listen to any actor (that is A list actor) thats done voice work and the toughest part they'll tell you is acting without seeing anything. And usually by yourself. As many voice tracks are recorded separately. "Yeah....Keifer, can you come in on Tuesday to do your lines?" and "....No its o.k Lucy.....come by the studio on Thursday, theres nothing else going on."

I would hope with all the Dragonlance "stuff" in the world that they plastered the windows with as much artwork as they possibly could.

All the wonderful stuff by Keith Parkinson that illustrates so many crucial moments in the plot. At least that way the actors would have an idea of whats required for some of the scenes....

One would think that rather than doing an animated movie a live action movie would be made, In its own way the Dragonlance Chronicles are just as epic a story as the Lord of the Rings. I am sure that there are many out there that would go and see the movie(s). Is there any chance that perhaps if the cartoon does well there will be a live action version?

Then how far along are they in, production-wise?

It is not uncommon for animated movies to preceed live action films. I know there was an animated movie of The Hobbit but I can't remember if there have been animated versions of the Lord of the Rings. The recent film The Cronicles of Narnia.... was first done in animated format. I suspect if the DL animated movie is profitable they will continue to make the Cronicles series animated. Perhaps that will grab the attention of more influential people in the film industry.

I suggest promote the heck out of the movie.

Yes there was an animated film for the LoTR. If I recall correctly however it covered both the Fellowship of the Ring and the The Towers (or at least halfway through the two towers). I would swear that there is also a animated film that covers the return of the king because I remember seeing Frodo getting his finger bit off by Gollum in animated platform but I can't find the film. Of course I have not looked for it.

Sighs. Yeah, unless you know you have a very hot commodity brand, such as Harry Potter.

Sighs. It took 20-odd years (and advancement in CG special effects) for LOTR to go from rotoscope animation to live-action. Put that formula to DL, I'm gonna be too old and too blind to watch it live.

And just to sound more macabre, Hickman and Weis would probably be dead.

I don't think it would take that long, because the technology is already here. The studios just need to know that there is a big enough audience to warrant making a live-action film, and while I love DL I do not know if there is enough people to warrant making a live film.

Aww, golly Gee, guys! Animated movies aint so bad! Think if they tried to pull off Akira in live action. unless they had a budget in the triple digits it would look craptacular. I think its the same line of thought in this situation as well.

Guys, if you have the time to do so, I suggest you listen to the podcasts made by Tracy Hickman from their Dragons of Dwarven Depths book tour. They're available HERE. The latest podcast (July 24th) should answer many of your questions and doubts about the movie. Tracy Hickman mentions why he actually prefers an animated movie.

the podcast is an mp3. use any of a number of players freely available online to listen to it. Don't let the nomenclature confuse you--if someone using a creative product had come up with it first, it would be a Riocast =)

Nah. I'm gonna sleep like Van Winkle and hopefully wake up 20 years from now and there will be a live-action format.

I'm not so sure. The BBC's live action Chronicles of Narnia (Prince Caspian, the Line the Witch and the Wardrobe, etc) are quite old. I think they predate the cartoons by some time, do they not?
