Ok, we all know that many domains are based on movies, books, etc. to one degree or another, but what's based on what. Some domains can be analoged by common sense alone. But some aren't so easy, and common sence can lead to wrong conclusions. I don't know how many people want to know this kind of thing, but just in case someone does I thought this forum might be a good resouce, as I cant find an analog list anywhere on the net. I'll start.

Barovia=Dracula
Lamordia=Frankenstein
Har'ikar=The Mummy
Valachan=Cat People
Scourange=I Walked With a Zombie
Sea of Sorrows=Ghost Ship
Markovia=Island of Dr. Moreu
Mordent=Godefroy's story seems vaguely similar to The Shinig, though I haven't seen or read it.
Nova Vassa=Dr. Jekkyl and Mr. Hyde.
Sanguinia=Masque of the Red Death
Sargonass=Seems reminicant of Jaws.

That's all I can think of plese add to and/or contradict this list. That's what this thread is for.

You might want to rethink some of that - Ghost Ship for example, was made after the Sea of Sorrows was envisioned and published. Also, the movie is differentiated from the domain by being terrible.

Mordent is not really like the Shining at all - though recent 3rd edition entires tried to make the House on Gryphon Hill to be similar to the Overlook in the Shining. The domain and its lord are better represented by movies like The Haunting (the original), or better yet, The Haunting of Hell House.

Saragoss isn't much like jaws either - despite the presence of sharks. I suppose it could be played that way, but the old 2nd edition material dwelled more about the gritty survivalist drama amidst the saragossa. I can't think of a movie off hand, but that film Lifeboat might make a good model (or, if your a bad tv buff, that Voyager episode when they're caught in the space bubble with all the other ships)

On the whole though, I don't think that every domain has a corresponding movie.

I always had The House of Lament pegged as the closest analogue to Hill House from The Haunting.

Also, I suspect many domains are actually based on those quaint items that look like stacks of paper glued together at one end... boks or something like that? You may have heard of them.

I don't know if there was a movie done on it (maybe a good Twilight Zon/Outer Limits episode) but despite the cat motif, Valachan takes after the short story "The Lottery."

Wow. I don't anything to add to the list (sadly), but I did want to comment that I'm impressed with everybody's literary/movie knowledge. It's nice to be around gamers who actually have read more than just the "popular" sci-fi/fantasy and have seen classic movies alongside current special effects films. Kudos to all of you who have chosen to expand your minds (and in turn your gaming) by exploring the world around you.

Saragoss actually has quite a bit in common with a somewhat obscure movie called The Lost Continent (1968), to the point that the former was likely directly inspired by the latter.

(The movie was, in turn, based on the novel Uncharted Seas bu Dennis Wheatley.)

I was referring to the 1943 Ghost Ship.

Now, I don't think one needs too many guesses on what the island of Blaustein is based upon... But don't forget Kartakass, which without making too much of a stretch could be said to be based upon... Little Red Riding Hood! :D

I forget, was Red Riding Hood one of Asop's storys, because Kartakass reminds me of those quite a bit.

It was a Brothers Grimm fairy tale.

Just remembered that Paridon always reminded me of Sherlock Holms and Jack the Ripper.
