Either the "Wanderer's Journal" from the 1st Boxed Set, or the "Wanderer's Chronicle" from the 2nd Boxed Set will provide the most complete overviews of Athas.

Depends, really. The first boxed set is before the events of the novels, while the second boxed set is the "revised" version of the setting, including elements set after the Prism Pentad series of novels. Some people prefer the first box, others prefer the second. I personally set my games after the Prism Pentad series, but I keep the information pretty darned limited and restricted to my players.

I find them both to be very useful. The first one can pretty much be given to the players for them to read, as the details of the past are rather sketchy, and often incorrect.

The revised "Wanderer's Chronicle" is more useful to me as a DM.
