This article sums up the character tree concept pretty well. It is also interesting that Dark Sun is still referenced to by Wizards.

I still use the character tree in our games. Good for keeping the game deadly but keeping some campaign continuity going.

It is funny the hoops we jump through to get the new character involved though, one time the BBEG cast summon monster and low and behold the pc arrived.

Some of my players like the character tree, others consider it a curse!

They figure if they have a "spare" character, something will happen to the existing one. I have proven to them that I kill PCs without prejudice regardless of whether they have a "spare" but they are adamant.

This is the same mentallity as "IF I have a spare tire, I will get a flat."

My other players like the idea and have at least two PCs prerolled.

As far as replacing existing characters, they station their tree in different city states; the most common being Tyr and Nibenay. That way they are not too far away if needed.

My campaign is high level 12+, so they are aboe to send messages fairly easily to another tree member to go to x place in y days.
