Ok, I've read about Dark Sun and loved it. I have only played D&D for four years, so I'm quite unfamiliar wiht second edition and don't really know that much about darksun. I've recently managed to get all Dragon and Dungeon magazines that talk about darksun, but I feel like I'm still just glancing at the surface. What sources do you recomend me to get to gain a better understanding of this setting?

I'd suggest starting with reading Troy Denning's Prism Pentad series and then getting the 2e Revised Dark Sun Setting Box Set. Lots of good info to be gained on the setting from those.

And check out athas.org for what many fans (including most on this board) think of as a more accurate representation of DS rules for 3.5e rules.

Out of curiosity, who here has played in both the Athas.org version and in the Dragon Magazine version? Is there a thread that runs a comparison?

Well... I dunno about a thread that runs a comparison, but the archive has a 100+ page thread that is... interesting, the reactions to the Dragon/Dungeon magazine articles...

I really have no interest in reader reactions to the Dragon stuff. I'm fully capable of reading and forming my own reactions. I'm interested in hearing the actual experiences of people who *played* in campaigns based on the Dragon stuff, and based on ours. That's something that I don't have time to do myself, so I'd like to hear from the first hand experiences of those that have done it.

I've found from experience that with RPG materials, what you see isn't always what you get. Some stuff looks really good, but isn't really playable. Some stuff runs againt your preconceptions, and looks dumb, but when you play it, really comes to life. I'd looked over some Dark Sun stuff and was turned off at first impression, mostly because of all the jargon that I didn't understand. I thought this is really geeky stuff. Then I was lucky enough to get a college roomate who played DS and invited my fiancee and I to join in. Wow. That was 1993 and I'm still hooked.
