In the Living Greyhawk Gazateer, Hokar is listed as having a population of 21,000. As i look in older material Hokar is much smaller. IT seems like it has really gotten bigger since the Greyhawk wars. Does anyone have a story for that? I imagine that the remnants of the Sea Hold took it back during the SB schism there. After that the population swelled as old Holder refugees entered.

My understanding is that Hokar has become the seat of power for the free (i.e. non-Brotherhood) Lords in the Hold of the Sea Princes. As such escaped slaves and enemies of the Brotherhood have flocked to the city.

Thus you have the Brotherhood warring with Keoland around Westkeep; revolting Olman slaves casuing general problems in the Brotherhood lands; Agents of the Brotherhood and unscrupulous opportunists causing unrest further west, in the lands around Hokar; and the relatively peaceful and forgotten Duchy of Berghof with relatively peaceful Olman slaves and sparsely populated Holders dwelling quite happily and engaging in trade with Melkot to the north (and where my character is in charge of the Keep of Adlerweg in my campaign :D )

Particularly taking into account a recent Canonfire article on the region and the Hool Marshes, it's a realm with quite a lot of potential for adventure.

Someone else might have the figures at hand, but I think the population of the Hold went up from about 125K to 400K from the '83 box to the Gaz. I know it changed from SOf to Sofz.

I am thinking of making Hokar a refugee city. Since according to LGG it is governed by a loose council of nobles, I will make it a place with some serious infrastructure problems which will help explain the disease that spread down south from the Hool Marshes.
The Duchy of Berghof is not so peaceful these days http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=lg/lgmp/20051213a. There is a recent Living Greyhawk mod that takes place in Kusnir that may address this - I have yet to play it.

what are SOf or Sofz mean? Is that a race or does it stand for Suel/Oeridian/Flan mix?

Darn it - I hate that I don't have access to that kind of ongoing development.

SOf means it is a mix of primarily Suel and Oeridian with a little bit of Flan.
Sof means it is a mix primarily of Suel with a little Oeridian and a little Flan.
Not sure about the small "z", but I am thinking it was a typo on Wolfsire's part. The racial mix of population has varied from edition to edition. For instance, Perrenland used to be solely Oeridian.

Total population has been on a steady increase at the nation level. Cities and towns have also had volitility, but generally not as much. At any rate, you cannot put a whole lot of weight behind comparing old numbers to the new.

I can confirm that it does add to the "volatile" situation brewing over there. That said, that story arc is more about using - IMHO - the Hold's current political unrest to explain the comeback of.. ah.. something that will bring a smile to veterans of the WoG of old. Can't say more without spoiling it, so I won't.

z is the designation for Olman, since O is already taken.

Heh heh - I think I already sussed that one - although I'd be interested to if they've beefed up its stats for 3.5.

Obviously, as the Guardian of Adlerweg in our campaign (in possession of a certain magical ring from the good old days), my own character, Baroness Deloran (Rog2, Sor2, Shc3, Noct2, LN) would be in the frame for some hurt - or possible a good excuse to enhance the ring's magic! :D Shame I already paid a fortune to restore some of the magical abilities it lost

I figured this out finally. In LGG, in the section where they talk about the gazateer sections they, it says under population
Previously published population figures for the Flanaess were often very low given poor census-taking methods and outright falsification.
