Lack of Deities on Athas...

What exactly is the blocking force for deities on Athas. I remember reading about Dregoth's attempts at Godhood and their impossibility given the barriers that prevent divine conduits...or something like that. So Athasians all end up in the Grey after they die, huh? Do they even have access to the outer planes?

There are a lot of threads about this created over the years. If you do a search I'm sure you can find plenty on this topic. Generally there are two camps:

1. Athas is not related in any way shape or form to the other worlds of DnD, much like the current Eberron setting. There are no outer planes, Dregoth is deluded, etc, etc.

2. Athas is connected as per the standard TSR model where everything connects to everything else. It's just hard to get out because the Gray acts as some sort of interplanetary barrier. And if you go in for spelljammer, the Athasian crystal sphere is completely impenetrable.

Yeah, Athas has no deities and never had. Dregoth Ascending seems to have explained this by saying that the divine conduits run to the elemental planes or something hokey like that (yah, good retcon Kevin, lol). There were priesthoods and stuff back in the Green Age, but these were either following spirits of the land, elementals, or the delusions of their members (or all of the above).

Athas does have access to the outer planes - there are plenty of references to outer plane creatures appearing on Athas in the 2e material. Some of the contact happens through one-offs like the githyanki gate in Black Spine or Dregoth's gate. Others seem to come through spells (like the summoning of the tanar'ri picture in Dragon Kings) and the yugoloth (?) that's running about in one of the adventures. And then there are rules for passing through the Grey in Defilers and Preservers. Plenty of access. Furthermore, with so many different exceptions and approaches, the DM has lots of freedom in devising something cool for his own games.

Todesherr, I think there is a lot of stuff in your sig that is innappropriate for the boards. It is considered a courtesy to keep one's religeous or anti-religeous beliefs out of a gaming forum.

Which I said before in another thread. It is generally not a good idea to describe other people's expereinces as absurd.

Agree very much.

PS: Mike, are you still available for chat? I did not see you for ages.

There are some "deities" like the Spirit in the Prism Pentad. The druids I think are the closest thing you're going to find to worshipping deities. Besides the Sorcerer-kings and their commoners.

Jan, sorry for my absence. I've been preparing to move to Iowa, and between transferring my Masonic Lodge membership and getting things all set up there for my arrival, I've been completely occupied. I'll be logged in to MSN Messenger most of the day tomorrow, and would be quite glad to talk with you then!

A goofy idea that nobody will like-

Athas is actually part of sigil. It is the maze the lady of pain sends all of her hated enemies to. Oddly enough, it developed a life of it's own. The single planar gate (read dregoth's nice gate) is connected to sigil and the only way out. It's been a while, but i'll be back as i make my own campaign setting...MUAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHA
