The complete Arcane and Players Handbook 2 has the Warmage and Beguler classes and one thing I found interesting was they idea they had a very limited spell list but could cast any of the spells on it more or less at will. My idea for the templar would be to create a list of spells for the templars to draw upon but they don't need to memorise any spells on it.

Dumb idea or interesting? I tweaked the Templar spell list already when the spell compendium came out -http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?t=640088.

Doesn't the 3.5 templar by athas.org already work along these lines?

Yes, it does.

Yes, it does.

But rather then having a fixed list they learn and cast spells like a sorcerer does. Which is probably a superior method, as it allows for more flexibility.

Or varying spell lists as I have (and others) talked about in the past - see the link in my sig for some templar domains and some chat about it.

Sorta but they still have to know the spell like a Sorceror. The warmage/beguiler have a very focused spell list but in effect know every spell on it.

The Templar had trouble at time in our DS 3.5 game due to the cleric just being better most of the time. The extra spells were more or less useless when compared to extra domain spells, earlier access to higher level spells and spontaneous casting. The extra skill points and 2 martial weapons were a bit useless.

Maybe they're onto something when theysay Clerics are over powered (or any class with level 9 spells/psionics).

I think Clerics are usually rated as the 2nd or 3rd most powerful class. It's Druids that are really overpowered!;)

I only said Clerics are generally overpowered not how they compared vs other classes. With just the core rules the Druid is more powerful but throw in the splat books and Cleric seems to win.

I wasn't correcting you, merely commenting. But, you are right that it depends on which splat book materials you allow, their are a few things in the splat books for clerics that are really cheesy.

If not compared to other classes, then compared to what?

Oooo, ooo, I know! Laser-bearing dolphin cannibals...giant space halflings riding swarms of mini-hamsters, also from space...or the spawn of an elfling and a dwarfling!
