Help

I have a player who wants to play a Saumurai in a GreyHawk Setting, and he asked if there was an equivalent to Kara-Tur in the Greyhawk word.

I though I remember an article in Dragon or Dungeon about extended Greyhawk, but for the life of me... I can't re-find the article. Did that article even exist?

If there is an answer I would love to here it. If that article I seem to remember actually exists (as in, not a hallucination), I would also like to know where it was.

Thanks again

There was an article in Dragon (1998 Annual if I remember correctly) which briefly described the remainder of Oerik. Unfortunately, it was quite trite and contained only a sentence or two for each country. A samurai would likely hail from the island of Nippon, which is just off the southern coast. It appears to be identical to its real world medieval namesake. A ship would be able to sail from there to Greyhawk as long as it avoided scarlet sails.

Who says a samurai has to be from an 'oriental' land. Its a class, not a race. Im not up to scruff on warriors of the ages, but isnt a samurai basically a highly trained and disciplined warrior (perhaps with some sort of religious over-tone). I think Zief would be a good place where such an exotic warrior would hail from. It wouldnt take much to tweek the samurai class to give it a bit of a balkunish flavour...

Hi all -
I agree that the class is a concept and not a rigid exercise in the rules.
In fact, I've modified it for the dwarves, since it seems like the idea fits them perfectly. The Thane uses the dwarven axe and hammer as two weapons. Also there is that dwarven urgaush (2 handed wpn, iirc), that I considered using in place of 2 wpns. But again, the Thane seems to be the samurai in all things but "Greyhawk's" it.
Similliar topic was one I posted to Greytalk titled "Greyhawking the Shuenja" for much the same concept and idea. I don't think it has to be specific to an oriental aspect. I think some of the Al-Qadim stuff might not transfer as well, but it should with minor modifications.
Hope that helps.

First I'd like to thank OleOneEye

Dragon Annual 96 was where that map was. I had no idea it was that far back, I seemed to have remembered seeing it more recently. I would have never looked that far back, withouth your help.

To some of the others - I agree there can be non-oriental saumurai, but one of the players wanted a more oriental flavored character (and I was curious if there was an answer).

On the plus side, we are playing the Savage Tide path from Dungeon, and it all works out well, with the Nippon being just right around the corner (just off the bottom of the map).

Everyone, thank you ...this girl was lost without you
