Spicing up the jozhal

While going through my list of playable darksun races I decided that the jozhal needed a little bit of spicing up to help seperate it from pterran and dray. So I got to thinking what if I made them more bird like, kind of like a step between dinos and birds. So the 1st thing I decided to do was give them a beak/bill instead of a jaw like pterrans & dray have. My 2nd idea was expand on there behavior and make it more like that of an intelligent crow.

What do you guys think and do you have any other recomendations along these lines that will chage the fluff of Jozhals without changing the crunch of jozhals?

Aroo? They are already the most alien of all PC races: They don't look like drays and pterrans, but rather giant turkeys, or intelligent spindly crodlu. Drays and pterrans are humanoids with either a dragon's head or a pterrax's head on their shoulders....while jozhal are animal-like velociraptors right out of a Spielberg movie.

I have to agree with Penn.
I always thought of Jozhals like a smaller headed Velociraptor.

If the one's at the Golden Kank were any more spicy - their feet would be on fire ! :D

while I agree that they are not carbon copies of the pterran, dray, ssurran(sp?), lizardmen or silt runner(sort of lizard like) I just got to thinking that because they are so similiar in shape to Velociraptors why not go a little bit further down the small and smart dinosaur trail and make them like the proto birds that we all see running around the discovery channel all the time :D

That way they would immediatly be diffrent to the players who are reading the descrption of them instead of just another lizardman.

I never really saw them as the grossly over-hyped Velociraptors. I actually have simply envisioned them as a kind of sentient Compsognathus. They tend to have the same coloration/patterns (stripes), overall build, and I tend to like the idea that the Jozhals are about the same size.

I agree that they need to be spiced up. There is hardly any reference material.

I found only one "official" reference pick: page 40 of the Asticlian Gambit adventure by TSR. There the jozhals look way to big to me: medium/large instead of small.

I spotted one jozhal on the wavir banner:
IMAGE(http://www.siltskimmer.net/_arts/_heraldry/wavir.jpg)
from www.siltskimmer.net

I spotted 1 jozhal in the wild:
IMAGE(http://www.geocities.com/tticd/jozhal.jpg)
from this page.

I captured one jozhal myself:

Maybe I draw one day another one, because this one is probably to human-like.

This is all I found. I am currently playing a jozhal psion in a campain, so if someone knows where to find more reference picks, please don't hesitate to show them

I was thinking something similiar to the dinosaur above with a beak similiar to IMAGE(http://www.fotosearch.com/comp/DSN/DSN011/1784720.jpg)

Maybe some feathers and a community that has a crow like behavior

Ahh yes, good ol' Dawnstealer's pic. I wonder if it will make it in the Athas.org monster supplement -- to me, that is a perfect example of a Jozhal, and is what I envision when I think about Jozhals.

Didn't Sage do a pic with these critters too - besides the banner that is?

I'm not certain how the statements are in conflict since the velociraptor strikes me as one of the most birdlike of dinosaurs. I agree that they need more development and attention, but that doesn't require contradicting anything that's already there.

A good representation of what I, personally, envisioned the jozhal to look like can be found on page 177 of the (3.5ed) Fiend Folio under the listing for Ti-Khana Deinonychus.
I'm talking picture only, not stats etc

I like the jozhal represented as a velocirapter, myself. Elongating the jaw, as with compsognathus is a more attractive option that going with the "proto-birds," which all seem to have more stunted jaws.

I have to say, though...size of a turkey or not, being chased by this would probably scare the hell outta me...

That wasn't my banner actually this is:

I did do an actual picture, which is what the silhoette (spelling?) is from, but I didn't like it very much. I'm sure I could make a servicable picture if I had another go at it... but that will have to wait a bit.

This option seems very plausible. This also resembles the "official" jozhal in the adventure (but there the jozhal was too big)

Nice. Isn't that basically the banner for Merchant House Wavir?

Freakin' Baxa...gaahhhh...anyhoo
Let's not forget the two pics in the WJ -
Brom's depiction of one on p.66 of the WJ. :D
and another Baxa duzee at the end of the WJ (the Jozhal MC entry)

I usually like my Jozhals being at the low-end of small, borderline tiny.
