Not sure there is such a word, but here is the deal:

My Mystara Freeport (3E) campaign is Okay is slowly moving towards the module Hell in Freeport, though with quite a different twist to it.

First of all, the heroes have learned that their fathers, also a pirate crew, sold their souls to the demon Wiley Squarefoot for reasons unknown to the heroes. They are now in search for a ship. They believe that bringing the ship back to Freeport will save those souls. Ofcourse, they are being tricked. Once they get back to Freeport, they will instead find themselves in Freetown.

Now, I was thinking I want to make Hell seem more Pirate-ish. Instead of using the Ferryman for instance, I would like them to be able to use their own ship (Its magical BTW) to navigate the Sea of Hell or whatnot. They will still need help of some demon known as the Navigator to navigate those seas, so it will pretty much be the same plot.

Any other ideas for making Hell seem a bit more like how Pirates would see it?

Hell is probably the Pirate name for one of the Entropic planes (Pyts?).

Immediate thoughts turn to Davy Jones' Locker and ideas that revolve around a pirates' major causes of death- drowning, notably. People being keelhauled or walking the plank as punishments; being flogged in perpetuity.

The Jailors of a pirates' Hell I could envision as being devilish creatures wearing uniforms like commodores of a royal fleet (I'm envisioning Hanoverian era British soldiers for some reason, but it could really be anything- the "royalty" representing law and order to the pirates' preferred chaos and anarchy).

Visually, you could do worse than to grab the images of Davy Jones and his crew from the recent Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest (or, if you can wait until Mayish, I think PoC: At World's End is supposed to involve a piratey afterlife in some measure).

It's been a long time since I've updated the page (and I believe some of the links are now defunct), but I have several pirate related pages linked on my webpage that you might find useful.

I'm glad you pointed that out! My players have loved getting into the boozing and womanizing aspect of piracy. In fact I think that has taken up as much of the sessions so far as combat has. And they are careful about bringing enough rum for themselves and the crew on voyages.

This will be good for turning the screw.

Thanks for the link and ideas!

This campaign has taken a back seat to my Blackmoor campaign, but I am still hoping to get enough sessions played to get the party into Hell before May.

Imagery of British naval officers and PoC's Davy Jones & Crew should both work, as should the kinds of punishment you are suggesting.

Furthermore, I have decided to make the part of Hell that they will be visiting a vast sea with the locations of the module as Islands with ports etc. Victorian style architecture with infernal twists will also help. I am also thinking some fairly nasty ships patrolling the Seas of Hell...

While keeping the scary, this will still allow my PCs to be pirates and not have to move into too much of a standard D&D Planar game. Should be fun

Another thought that occurred to me, aside from the fear of a watery grave, is the notion that there would be long stretches of land where souls might be incarcerated- I'd imagine being forced to live the life of a landlubber would be a torment for a seagoing soul.

Where did you locate Freeport Havard? I was curious in case I ever do the same thing.

I have kept it pretty vague so far. All the players know is that it is somewhere in the Sea of Dread. I'm thinking close to where the Serpent Peninsula meets the Thanegioth Archipelago.

Also, the campaign is set in AC 1020 which has allowed me to advance society quite a bit and include canons and the occational pistol too increase the Pirate flavour.
