Is anybody using a rule for more frequent rolls re: high/sever/etc heat? I'm considering combat as a reason to increase the frequency of the checks. Suggestions?

Thanks in advance.

Combat doesn't usually last long enough to really warrant checks, though you could have your players make a check versus fatigue at the end of combat.

Yeah, that's kind of my double problem. Combat doesn't last long enough to make checks, but we're arena combat is frequent and the only situation where the heat will be a factor (considering other campaign situations)... so I'm looking for a way to game-rule wise add the "feel" of the heat in addition the flavor.

At this point if the only time we're dealing with armor is during combat in city arenas, there really isn't much of a game-rule penalty for going with heavier armor. I was just curious if anybody was making the checks every X rounds in combat or something.

Make the gladiator waiting place be open to the sun. Randomize gladiator matches so that gladiators will need to wait in whatever armor they wish to fight in because when they are called they get no time to put on armor as they are rushed into the arena.

So they might end up standing in the open sun for untold minutes, maybe hours, waiting until they get called. No possibility of shade. Waiting there in light armor will be helpful for those heat checks. If any PCs is silly enough to go in in heavy armor, feel free to have them make an hour or so's worth of heat checks while they wait for the call. If they decide to take the armor off while they wait, rush them into the arena while they are out of armor.

In the Arena at Urik especailly this could be a real issue. You could have them make a check every round of combat based on how much they exerted themselves and have the DC increase each round unless they rest. Then you could have rules setup for increasing penalties with failed checks.
1st failure they take 2d6 nonleathal damage
2nd failure they become Fatigued
3rd failure they become Exhausted
4th failure they faint

I actually ran a match using these approximate rules.

Remember you can alway design rules for specific encounters without having a larger mechanic that applies everytime. You don't need to even explain all the details of the rules to your players.
