i'd like to know what do you think about something that could seem power play, (and maybe it is, but i don't care. i only had a flash about a couple of possible characters).

the question is: i know that bards have no healing spells. but what do you think about an unherthed arcana divine bard in dragonlance? has he got them?

i was thinking about some gilean, branchala or hiddukel bards...

Personally, I throw the healing spells back into the bardic spell list. It really doesn't matter since bards are only available after the Chaos War, anyway. They can't ruin the clerics' fun in the War of the Lance.

So they can use both divine and arcane ambient magic?

It's still all arcane magic.

mmm... i don't think it fits well with what is written about branchala.
i prefer not including healing spell for the classical bard. the opposite for the divine bard, whose spells are divine (something like the branchala goodfellows).
but at this point, divine bards are member of a church as the clerics, are they to be played like mistics, or are they errant believers, something like rangers?
or maybe all the three.

Well, the truth is that while Branchala is patron of bards, the term "bard" doesn't necessarily have anything to do with the 3.5 character class. In fact, Krynn has had Bardic Colleges for thousands of years, and no bards who came out of those institutions cast spells. That's who Branchala is patron of.

A divine bard would need to be a prepared spellcaster (i.e. not a mystic or sorcerer) if they're getting their powers from Branchala. In the Age of Mortals, which is when the 3.5 D&D bards are active, the Holy Order of Branchala would probably get along with these new ambient casting bards, but since you can't multiclass cleric with bard there wouldn't really be any place for them in the Holy Order other than as allies or lay members.

Rangers, druids, paladins, and clerics all require a patron deity in Dragonlance. Bards, assassins, sorcerers, mystics, and non-Wizard of High Sorcery wizards don't.

Cam

mmm... i don't know. i think that spontaneous casting is more... branchalish...

i know. what i meant when i wrote "like rangers" was to refer to a devote not belongly strictly to the clergy, as the clerics do.

For some options on bards, check out my bard guide:

Dragonhelm's Guide to the Bards of Krynn

It talks about the divine bard some. It is certainly a viable option. While this would normally require a prepared caster, you can ignore that and go with spontaneous if you want. That's just a fluff thing. After all, the favored soul would draw power from a god, and it's a spontaneous caster.

why chose a favored soul if there are the mistics? they're more... in the setting. and are you sure favored soul draws power from a god, and not from a heartalike source?
actually i prefer the favored soul, as far i find mistics too weak, but if i were the dm (even though i'm not, i'm only a ravenloft master, krynn sees my only as a pc...) i'd forbid favored souls in dragonlance.
what do you thinh, dragonhelm?
ps. here in italy it's 4 am, and i've drunk too much beer and rum, but make sure i'll read your guide. i hope it will help me in playing a hidden hiddukel bard... not now, up to now i'm a solmanick crown knoght, but who knows what future will bring?
