I've just finished reading a book by Philip Reeve (best known as the author of Mortal Engines et seq.), which is entitled Larklight: A Rousing Tale of Dauntless Pluck in the Farthest Reaches of Space. If you liked Treasure Planet you're almost certain to like Larklight. It takes you on a whirlwind tour of the Solar System, and along the way you'll encounter space spiders, moon moths, mushroom men, aether pirates, auto-butlers and even HRH Queen Victoria. Huzzah!

I was just reading a review of the novel in a journal yesterday, as the novel has just been released in Australia. As part of my job, I have to be familiar with childrens and young adult literature, but now I have another good reason.

I've been meaing to pick up Predators Gold and His Mortal Engines for a while now, so I'll add them to the list.

What's your job, pray tell? I love reading good YA fantasy and sci-fi. My favorite author is Diana Wynne Jones, but Philip Reeve has made quite a good impression on me so far.

I've read the first three books in the series, and I have the final one on order at the local library. Mortal Engines is my favorite of the three, with Infernal Devices coming in second. Larklight is much lighter in tone than the Hungry City Chronicles -- terrible things happen, but you don't have people dying left and right like in Mortal Engines.

I'm a librarian. In one job I work delivery services and information programs for children and young adults and in my other job I develop classes to teach information literacy skills to university students at all levels of study from undergraduates to Doctorate students.
Plenty of scope for reading a wide variety of products and sources under the heading of 'professional reading'.
