Anyone know of any home-brew stats for Half-Vistani? The 3.5 ones by White Wolf are to steeped in 2e and rather bland (i.e. +2 racial bonus to lighting fires?).

I'd say check out the Domains of Dread hardcover. Yes, it's 2E but it's still chocked full of gypsy goodness. Personally i like the knife fighting ability. Either that or look into Van Richten's guide to the Vistani and come up with your own ideas, but personally i prefer the DoD. Hope that helps.:D

I've been working on my version thats a little more robust than the White Wolf one. I just find their half-vistani is on the blah side and see no incentive to play one due to the lackluster racial abilities.

You have to remember that there are 7 clans to choose from in addition to the normal abilities. There is no +2 to lighting fires, lol... its +2 to survival checks (this rises to +4 when survival depends on lighting fires). They can ALWAYS light fires. Booya!

Most of the clan abilities are simply skill bonuses, but the Zarovan one in particular is nice (1d10-1d4 bonus to initiative).
Half-vistani is also more of a roleplaying race (kinda like half-elf). If a player is looking at a race and going "well damn, this race doesn't give me +6 to con!" then they should be slapped with a smelly fish.

Half-elves are even more desirable than the current half-vistani race. Moon Madness, as it is now, pretty much makes a half-vistani character (especially spellcasting ones) unplayable.

D20 preaches balanced PCs, which the current half-vistani is not. To many draw backs even on a role-playing standpoint.

To this i say...BLAH!!! No offense but obviously you've never role played a day in your life. It's about the experience and i've found tons of thrills and joys from my half-vistani character. As for the moon madness, it's like playing an afflicted with lycanthropy character. There are tons of cool playable experiences if you're willing to give it a try and put forth the effort.

Hmmm, yes, I've never role-played a day in my life

Anyway, the lycanthrope is a bad example. At least being a were-creature has some perks. Not being able to get your spells back, and to a lesser extent, not being able to naturally heal due to moon madness is big drawback even if it only happens three days during the month.

There are an incredibly large amount of ways to lose your spells and not be able to heal naturally. If the player plans ahead for the full moon, then he should be fine. Consider it a work related injury!

The roleplaying value of such an ability alone outwieghs the "flaws" (if you can call it that). Personally, the half-elf is the most useless race in my opinion. Atleast the Half-vistani may have some neat skills, and a plus to a stat.

If you are that concerned about such a minor fault, then just don't use the race. Plenty of people play it, as is, without complaint.

So another way to lose spells and not naturally heal that’s built into a PC race is justified due to that? I have to disagree. This is Ravenloft we're talking about. How many encounters/adventures hinge on there being a full moon in this setting?

Moon madness would be fine if a character received a little more in the way benefits than what the race currenty offers.

There's plenty of ways for a character to role-play being an outcast and that acts oddly three days out of the month. A restrictive mechanic that forces you to do so is overkill IMO. Not being able to prepare spells and the possibility of running off into the wilderness at night is not a "minor" draw back.

Yeah, low light vision, mecanhically considered an elf, a favored class of any, immunity to sleep-like spells , +2 racial bonus on saving throws vs. enchantment spells or effects, and two automatic languages is pretty drab compared to what the half-vistani get.

I like the concept of the race but feel that it was coverted poorly to 3e/3.5. Its to watered down by holding on to antiquated 2e mechanics IMO.

Well i'll say this, it's not like anything is set in stone. Like i tell my players, if you don't like it, change it. As long as the player and the DM agree then who cares. The main thing is to enjoy the experience. If you don't like playing a half-vistani then by all means don't play one. However, if you like the challenge and don't mind the quirks then pick up the race and play it. It's not like someone's holding a gun to your head and making you play one.

Never did I say I didn't like the concept of the half-vistani. I just don't like how White Wolf converted them to 3.5.

I plan on allowing one in my current campagin, but I'm certainly not using the mechanics for them as they are now.
