Ever thought of this idea?

It's said that there are no more paladins on Athas because the idea of serving good and right for the simple rewards of faith and inner peace faded from the world a long time ago. But.........why? Inner Peace and faith are in short supply on a world like Athas, especially with difficulty in trying to survive.

I allow paladin characters in my game riding kanks and other athasian mounts. just because people say they don't exist anymore does not mean they don't

mostly to common folk they are hard to distinguish from other madmen who have been in the sun for too long. that is till that start smiting evil and and calling down real holy power.

Even then they are really rare and scattered across the whole of Athas. They usually travel solitary from one catastrophe to the next in an (almost everybody might say insane) bid to bring hope and justice to the world. Most usually die in the wastes confronting the unforgiving climate and horrors. Or executed by sorcerer-king officials for daring to oppose them.

Thus their numbers stay an even too too few. And those few that actually die of old age are legends that most people don't even know exist in the current age ( popular propaganda to keep others from following them is to despute any stories brought back from other places as nothing more then legends from a previous age) or unknow heroes engaged in a perpetual war against it might seem like the very world

Works just fine...

I've always thought that paladins, like clerics, are tied to the elements for their abilities. They just use them slightly different. The only difference I would apply is to allow for either lawful good or lawful neutral alignments. This way a paladin could put the emphasis on either law or good. For the lawful neutral paladin his abilities of Aura of Good, Detect Evil, and Smite Evil would, of course, change to Aura of Law, Detect Chaos, and Smite Chaos.

Xplore has done some good stuff with athasian paladins that are tied to the SK's.

For the SKs, I find that the blackguard works well as a paladin (or anti-paladin). Strikes me as being just another type of templar really.

The thing with Xplore's version is that it fits the dark parody that is darksun. Like everything else, it is a twisted version of something else.
