I don't know if anyone noticed this before, but in Dungeon #7 there is a comment about how the entire Known World++ is labelled Empre of Thyatis on the map in the Master Rules. It states that the term is only a geographical one and that the other nations of the Known World are independent with Thyatis controlling what we know to be Thyatis and having claims to most of the Isle of Dawn.

Probably not controversial, but it was nice to see it explained in print

Yes, I noticed it some time ago, too. This thing is quite funny anyway, because the canon contradicts itself some times:

- The CM1 module seems to fix the mistake, anyway, by clearly showing the clamied lands of Thyatis and Alphatia in the introduction map.

- The "Saga of the Shadow Lord" module seems to consider the old Mentzer's map, saying in the introduction that Wendar has many ties with Thyatis and so its elvish king asked for help to the Thyatian emperor, etc. etc.

- VotPA, again (in the introduction, again) says that Thyatis does not contol the land N and NW ot the mainland territory: the Mentzer's map is wrong and the mistake is due to the influence of some "Thyatian compiler" of the original Nithain map.

I like OldDawg's idea that the region labelled Thyatis is a little more than an error. Perhaps it refers to their Sphere of interest, partly as a colonizing project (as seen in some FGaz'es), partly as a system of alliances (as with Wendar) etc.

Adventuring in the Mystaran Past

1. On the whim of an Emperor

The Emperor of Thyatis stared at the old map. Oddly Alphatia wasnt on it.
His aide leaned forward to examine the curiosity.
"Um? Sir? Shouldn't that bit be labled Empire of Alphatia?"
Emperor Zendrolion snapped a look of disgust at the disloyalty of his staff.
"If I say there is no such place as Alphatia, then that is all." The aide straightened and cleared his throat.
"Yes my Emperor!"

The Emperor's Aide carried word to the Cartographers guild. Overnignt, Every map was altered and new ones issued.

DM Briefing: Emperor Zendrolion Issues new Maps. Maps without any sign of Alphatia. Irrelevent until you colonize a piece of vacant coast based on that map and the Alphatians show up to tax your Wizard-Baron.
