Hey guys,

Recently, I was listening to the Canticle (I'm pretty sure that was the source) and heard the pronunciation of Majere as May-here and suddenly realised that all these years I've only heard it as May-jeer.

Is the first the 'correct' version?

Huh. I've always said it Ma-jer.

I do know that Caramon rhymes with 'care-mon' and Raistlin with 'waste-lin', but I always stumble on Majere.

People pronounce things however they like. Some guess how things are pronounced based on languages they know of - Majere has a J in it, which in Spanish is a "h" sound, while in other languages it's a "y."

The standard pronunciation for Majere is "muh-JEER" however, which is how I've heard most people say it.

Cheers,
Cam

That's how I commonly hear it too, though I think the "h" pronunciation is common enough too. I want to say I heard Margaret say it that way once, though I could be thinking of something else.

Just a note for everyone, the Canticle is not an authority on how everything is pronounced. It's a fan podcast, and like fandom in general, we may pronounce things a few different ways. I'll try to make a note of that in the next episode.

Quite right. While I'm very much a stickler for pronunciation in general, I think the Canticle serves as a valuable reminder that we all take something different from the things that we like in common. One person's take on pronunciation, or the importance of minotaurs and knights, or the value of books by a specific author, are another person's things to ignore.

Cheers,
Cam

Hey,that isn't how I meant it.

I merely wanted to put the source of the pronunciation in my e-mail to give it context. I understand that it is fan-created and that The Canticle doesn't produce The One True Law. I listen to a few other podcasts and mostly do so for enjoyment and ideas, not to subscribe to a set ideology. As I said, it was actually one of the few times that I'd heard anyone outside my gaming group speak the name aloud - as we all read Chronicles at about the same time, it created a sort of consensual reality as far the names were concerned. When I mentione dit to the guys at gaming last week, they were all interested too and when I mentioned I coudl put it on the Forums, a general agreement was reached, mostly out of curiousity.
Thanks for the replies, everyone, I'll pass this along to my party on Saturday night.

i'll admit, it is very strange to hear other people saying the names of things from the book, and prouncing them in a way that sounds foreign or wrong in my ears, since i've been saying it one way my whole life.

my hope with teh canticle is to open debates just like this, so that people can sit and compare how they say it to how others do.

Thanks for the discourse, guys. It is actually interesting to me and the fact that sensible discourse can occur is also quite good.

If you'll excuse me now, I'm off to the Realms forums to discuss the pronunciation of the word Drow....:D

Thanks Trey. Language is something that has fascinated me for quite a while, and it is somethign that I take pains to ensure is fine in any game I run. In fantasy settings, it is still important to have an internal consistency for language and its pronunciation, because stray words that have been inserted randomly do jar the senses.

As for the Drow statement, I was only joking. I've been on the periphery of that argument too many times. It has become a bit of a spectator sport for me. :D

Still, if it does make it on to The Canticle, I'd very much like to hear the discussion.

Sorry to get in late on this conversation, fellas, but, like I used to tell Mina, better late than never, right?

Personally, I've always pronounced Majere muh-jare.

A little too late! First, she tried to leave me for another guy, and I naturally got jealous, so I confronted her about it, and then she tried to kill me! In the end, she spared my life and left me broken, battered, and bruised in the streets of Flotsam.

...That's when your damn enchantment started to work. I think you planned it that way.

I have heard it pronounced Muh-JEE-ruh. Have fun with the drow pronunciation debate, I have had it in RL and it can get heated.

I have been a spectator to such foolishness. I am just waiting now for someone to start an argument on the Drider-equivalents in Eberron. Are the Scorrow SCO-roe or SCO-row? :D

I'm just interested in how different people pronounce game terms that have no basis in actual reality, so really it is just either a consensual reality (everyone else uses the same pronunciation so you do too) or a constructed reality (you've never heard it out loud so yuo make your own judgement call). Getting upset about someone else's use of a word is just silly.

Yeah, when I was surfing on the Internet one day, I came across a site that actually had the pronunciation muh-JEER on it. I looked at it and said, "I'm still pronouncing it muh-jair."
