I have a town based roughly off of "Deadwood" that boasts an 8000 strong population and a prosperous silver mine. Though nominally part of a nation, its largely on its own. I was thinking of placing if in northern Perrenland, or in the Theocracy of the Pale. Any suggestions?

Well, perhaps the biggest thought would be this:

Where do you plan on having the bulk of the campaign? If it is in the town of Deadwood, then placement does not much matter. If it with frequent trips to the Gem of the Flanaess, then placing in the Hills near the Duchy of Urnst would be best, either the Abbor Alz, or the Cairn Hills.

If you are looking for forays into the once powerful Great Kingdom, Alhissia and areas near the Iron Hills would be best.

Again, placement for Deadwood is somewhat dependent on the campaign. No point in putting it near Torag Bahru if they are going to be fighting the machinations of the Scarlet Brotherhood on their doorstep.

The Pale might lend itself to a kind of frontier justice, but I would suggest taking a look at Diamond Lake, from the Age of Worms. IMHO, it has a very similar feel to what you are looking for and may yield a few ideas.

I'm looking for a arid, cool temeperate "frontier justice" region. The city will be called Silverton, and I am working on the Diamond Lake model, with parts of "Deadwood" (the HBO series) and L'trel (form Dungeon #44) thrown in for good measure. I know I don't have to make it fit exactly, but I've run campaigns in Keoland, Greyhawk City/Cairn Hills, Ratik, Veluna/Furyondy, and the Wild Coast. I'm just looking for a new site. The city and its environs are the real campaign; it takes place in Silverton and the local region (within 25 miles), so exterior plots don't matter much.

go for the BFE area and put it in Ratik or pre-invasion Bone March. With that you could even make a future campaign twist dealing witht he invasion.

I was thinks of suggesting using Diamond Lake but tweaking it to your campaign but it looks like you've already got that.

Here are some suggestions:

1) Diamond Lake in the Cairn Hills.

2) On the coast near the Gull Cliffs. The Gull Cliffs could hide many things, a town on the coast there could host a variety of adventures, pirates, exiles from the former Great Kingdom, miners, merchants, drifters, and a variety of others hiding their pasts or chasing their futures.

3) The Wild Coast. Plenty of old ruins, odd mining ventures, adventure in the Gnarley, Sea adventures in the Wooley Bay, politics between the orcs of the Pomarj, the Gynarchy of Hardby, the City of Greyhawk, the Demi-humans of the Ulek States, and the Locals wanting to remain free of them all.

4) The Starkmounds. Close the the Rushmoors, The mountains, several forests, Valley of the Mage, and on the borders of Gran March, Geoff, Sterich, and Keoland

5) In the Clatspur Range in a pass between Perrenland ann Highfolk/Vesve. Perrenland is rough and mercenary. Vesve is haunted with the agents and creations of Iuz, the Barbarians to the north and the chaotic good people of the Highfolk.

6) The Northeastern Flinty Hills/Rakers... far enough from Nyrond so there isn't a whole lot of law and order and balanced between the monsters of the Rakers, the humanoids of the Bonemarch, and the Lawful Evil machinations of the North Kingdom.
