Myoshiman characters (OD&D) -- Wizards

Ok, time for the last class -- Magic Users.
Basically, I'm going to use the Hakomon from Golden Khan of Ethengar -- it's similar enough to the OA Wu Jen that it can fit, at least from a rules point of view.

However, to allow a bit of variety, I'm allowing Myoshiman magic users to join their own Secret Crafts (a.k.a. Okuden).
Since some interesting new Secret Crafts have been already developed on the Vaults, I'm going to use them.

In keeping with the AD&D version of the Rakasta, Myoshimans will be stronger in the Illusion, Transformation, Enchantment and Conjuration schools, and weaker in the others. Therefore, they'll have appropriate SC for those schools:
  • Ailuromancy: the standard summoning jutsu ( http://www.pandius.com/ailuroma.html )
  • Shadow Mastery: one of the possible illusionistic jutsu (see http://www.pandius.com/shadmast.html)
  • Illusions: the other school of illusionistic magic
  • Witchcraft: enchantment (the part related to charmes and curses)
  • Cryptomancy: enchantment (the part related to control over matter and energy)
  • Alchemy: alteration

I may try to alter somewhat Witchcraft and Cryptomancy to fit them better with the setting -- assuming I can find interesting alternate powers.
Naturally, comments and proposals (especially on the alternate powers, or alternate SC) are welcome.

That's a pretty good equivalence from a conceptual standpoint as well. (don't recall if 2e wu jen were any different).

I'm not sure about Enchantment (meaning I don't have a good read one way the other), but the other three seem perfect for an OA/Myoshiman setting. Perhaps a rule that the wizards must be specialists?

Are you going to be combining wizard specialization with SC?

Out of the SCs, alchemy is the only one that seems out of place. The rest seem good a fit (although, I agree, witchcraft needs a slight twist).

Not necessarily, but certainly specialization should be encouraged. Note that in AD&D, Rakasta can only specialize in those schools.

In OD&D, I don't think so, since specialization doesn't exist -- though Color of Magic should be used to emulate it. In AD&D, yes.

Yes. Witchcraft has those voodoo-like powers which may need to be changed. Alchemy should indeed be replaced by something else, as oriental alchemy is more appropriate to Ochalea than to Myoshima, but I've currently no better ideas.

I like the fact that you will be using the Hakomon (with mods). Making use of the options given in the gazetteers makes sense. I like how OldDawg does the same things in his gazetteers and I'm glad you are doing the same thing. It makes it feel like im getting more for the money I spent all those years ago ;)

Thanks. I have been using both the Hakomon and the Shaman for Myoshima and Ochalea, since they are good matches for the Wu Jen and Shugenjia or White Lotus Shaman of AD&D.
