Tieflings in Mystara...?

Hi all!

I'm a longtime Mystara DM and lurker on these boards and the MML. I was at GenCon but unfortunately wasn't able to make it to the announcement for 4e. I was a bit perturbed to discover that the plan seems to be to included tieflings and eladrin as player races in the new Player's Handbook. My knee-jerk reaction was that is was yet another piece I would have to house-rule out of the mix. It isn't that I have anything against tieflings, just that they really do represent Planescape in my mind and I didn't think I wanted a game going that direction.

Then just a couple minutes ago I had an inspiration: the diaboli. Tieflings could be used as diaboli crossbreeds possibly, or as a species related to the diaboli. Often we see world shaking events transpire in the different campaign settings to explain changes brought about by new rules versions. I'm not necessarily proposing something like that, but considering how radically the magic rules are changing in 4e, it might be an opportunity. Maybe something happens among the Immortals or Old Ones and suddenly it becomes possible for mortal wizards to more easily pierce the barriers between dimensions, maybe allowing a bit more contact between the diaboli in the Nightmare Dimension and Mystara. Tieflings could be a result of that contact. And of course that just begs for other Nightmare Dimension creatures to become more of a hazard for adventurers. :D

Any thoughts?

That's a possibility. Tieflings in Planescape are not really a race as much as a term to cover all "plane-touched" mortals whose planar background is from the lower planes. If you don't use the PS cosmology, Tieflings make little sense, though they could be used as progeny of Entropic Immortals.
Using them as nightmare-dimension-touched characters is also possible, though probably the typical abilities of the Tiefling are not that similar to those of diaboli and other nightmare-dimensional beings (e.g., the various elemental resistances or the darkness power are related to similar powers typical of the PS fiends, but not typical of diaboli and the like).

Those are good possibilities there, Lord_Amber, though they will remain similar to the 'D' word IMCs (but using 'T' instead ;) ). Mystara inherently has so many good candidates for PC races that this is one I can pass on. If they were to be used by me personally though, I'd probably use your ideas.

Welcome to the board, btw.
