I didn't know where else to put this, so I'll try here. In the articles posted so far, there has been talk about points of light in the vast darkness. Which really sounds interesting so far, but what I am curious about is where is this generic setting going to be placed? Is this what is going to happen in FR, Greyhawk, Ebberon, or what? Before now I've always assumed the generic setting for all previous editions to be Greyhawk. I've always liked the D&D deities best, but assuming they are getting reworked too.

If this setting is going to be "generic" and not one of the already developed worlds, perhaps we can get a thread posted in the campaign settings dealing specifically with this generic setting.

Personally, I usually homebrew my own world, but until I know more about the new edition I'll stick to the generic world for the game that will be created in the books. Which means that it will be a year or more after the core books come out before I create my own world.

Well for now I guess we could use this thread to talk about this generic setting as information comes out.

I think it's just the assumed background for encounter-tables, availabilty of items in shops and size of randomly generated villages. It's not meant to be a setting with any actual places or NPCs.

From what I understand, this generic setting is so generic that its not placed in any specific place. I believe that the idea is to have a theme more than a setting.

Taking the Planescape view, I would say an unnamed and random Prime Material of little importance.

Of course, it would be important to the adventurers.... Maybe a campaign wherein the adventurers avidly work to connect the points of light to illuminate the darkness and bring civilization to the masses. In turn the GM could run several consecutive campaigns designed around the concept and done at various points in history. This would define the campaign world, with the original adventurers heroes because they thought there was a better way of living... Or tyrants because they enslaved the world.

Just a thought.

As always, your mileage may vary.

To me, if you want to show what your new system is all about you would want to create a campaign world that would highlight all the new great features. I can understand a generic world, but I was hoping, and still am, for a new campaign world with a little more meat than nameless towns, cities, lands, and people for these examples they are talking about.
