I am hoping to start a DS campainge soon and one of my players wants to be a beguiler. I am not really fond of the idea, and I only have the first Box (1991) but they do not seem to fit so well. Was sort of looking for thoughts and ideas form a more veteran crowd.

On a sort of related note, I was thinking of making Defilers cast like Sorcerers and Perservers cast like Wizards, as that feels kind of flavorful. Might beef up the amount of spells the Sorcerer can choose. On that note a Beguiler would be a defiler, which works and doesn't all at the same time.

First off, have you looked at the stuff on athas.org - the official Dark Sun page, with converted rules regarding defilers and preservers?

On beguilers, despite having reservations about most of the "expansion" classes, I wouldn't have any problem at all incorporating the beguiler into an Athasian campaign. The beguilers flavor fits into Athas near perfectly. I can easily see beguilers under the service of the Veiled Alliance, working to undermine the work of the templarate, or vice versa. In a world where a spellcasters survival often depends on stealth and trickery, the beguiler would have a distinct advantage.

Also note that the spellcasting abilities of a beguiler, if incorporated into an Athasian campaign, would require a source of magical energy. Preserving or defiling would be the most obvious, and either, IMO, would work. Remember, the act of preserving is not, at its core, based in the realm of good intention, and, in any case, the beguiler is not inheritantly evil. Its more a matter of "the ends justify the means".

Any arcane spellcaster on Athas is fine woth the DMs approval but as already mentioned would need a power source.

As for me, I shall accept no DS class with spontaneous arcane casting. Rajaat had to invent magic, not to take it from any natural source.
