Is Greyhawk going to be destroyed?

I posted this on the fourth edition Greyhawk forum, but I am very interested in this idea and was wondering if anyone else had, had the same thoughts.

Since the fourth edition announcement several articles have been posted on the RPGA’s website that seem to allude to the immanent destruction of Oerth. Most of these allusions are found in Tim Sech’s Diplomacy articles. The evidence appears to point toward the reawakening of Tharizdun. In A Sudden Turn of Events Sech writes:

It is said that the Bonehearts are gathering more forces for some unseen enemy or war. Now while that may not seem like a big deal as they often do build up before they attack the various nations surrounding them my sources say that they are not building up to go to war but to help defend their territory . . .

The fiends that Old Wicked still has influence over have been seen in the far reaches of Oerth. They are not concocting devious plans to manipulate the local constabulary but instead seem to be searching for something. Many have been seen in areas of high concentration of the Scarlet Brotherhood and in the Yatil Mountains . . . (A Sudden Turn of Events)

They might be planning to end the Living Greyhawk campaign in a big way. That probably wouldn't affect other versions of Greyhawk, however.

Hi all -
My belief has long been that the sails actually resonate a timing aspect and with the years winding down at 592, the sail will move to its full zenith sometime during 600. However, this would mean that the structure is part of the original Great Kingdom and created just before, during or after the founding (after and it would have been adjusted to fit its time line).
However, I do wonder about the sky to the west comment. It does sound a little like EN World's Burning Sky adventure path title (although no real connection, nor have I read anything other than the title).
It always makes me question the true motives of those people that don't follow anything but Gygax's work in their interpretation of canon. Because in so doing, the Oerth is destroyed. Thus this could be turned into a bringing back of the original ideas that EGG had (even if these seemed to be written out of spite of/for TSR).

Overall, I'd say that I do not believe that WotC would destroy Oerth. TSR/WotC has "attempted" this before with Apocalypse Stone, Die! Vecna, Die! and other modules (AS was the 2nd to 3e conversion). With the recent statements regarding Eberron not advancing by two years as previously reported, I just can't see them deciding on destroying the world. I say this because of the backlash that would be had, although, it would go in stride with the backlash that they've received regarding the canceling of Dragon and Dungeon mags as well as the general perception regarding 4e.
Although, in the vein that they've taken Castle Greyhawk, they may make it so that they can remove any major features that have become iconic and make them new features into their Points of Light world. Thus, PoL PC's could still travel to and adventure within Castle Greyhawk, visit White Plume Mountain and defeat (succumb) to the Temple of Elemental Evil.

However, allowing the world to bask in destruction would be preferable to it writhing in continued horrible decision making. This would forever be a black mark against the company that has brought me 29 years of joy.

Be Well. Be Well Kept.

Hi all -
OK, before I posted the above post the stuff from WotC's site about October and Beyond was not up. Now, they are reviewing Dungeon Survival Guide which shows Castle Greyhawk and White Plume Mountain....hmmm, is that a sign of things to come as I preposed? Just asking!

As I pointed out in a thread about the rather crappy doomgrinder article, over on the canonfire forum, the article should be ignored.

The events of the Doomgrinder module, unless the author of that web article is now the arbiter of what published material is suddenly going to be declared non-canon, were concluded before the LG era. Either outcome of that module proves that its story of the doomgrinder's nature is true. Either the adventurers return triumphant and tell the tale, or they fail and a big chunk of GH city gets ruined.

If you play LG, I suggest you contact your triad and the circle immediately telling them that this garbage is not worthy of inclusion in the campaign finale, just in case that is what the intent of the article was.

It does sound as though the big T might be coming back in some form or another. Maybe the finale will just bring Greyhawk more in line with the Points of Light vision for the current leadership's vision of the DnD world. So mybe not destroyed but cast into a Dark Age...?

I was disappointed that so much of the mystique of the Doomgrinder was lost with the mundane, workmanlike module but I don't think it is true to say that the module has been completely cast from canon. The basic premise could still be sound but the derro's plans might have been scuppered at an early stage in the 'canon' version.
