Sublime Cessation of Time's Passage
9th Level Magical Spell

Range: 0
Duration: Instantaneous
Effect: The spellcaster only

This powerful spell invokes a subtle arcane mastery over the flow of time itself. Put simply, once it's invoked, the spellcaster ceases to age - magically or naturally - for a period of one full century. As this is an instantaneous effect, it can't be dispelled or negated once it's cast, making it much more potent and reliable than longevity potions or wish magics.

While powerful, this spell does have its drawbacks. To place oneself outside of time is not a natural state; once this spell has taken effect, the caster forever after becomes unable to gain experience, advance in levels or quest for Immortality. This holds true even after the century of unaging life granted by the spell has passed. In addition, the character's ability to memorize his daily allotment of spells is somewhat reduced; the character loses one-third his daily allotment of spell slots.

Use of this spell is fairly commonplace among the elder wizards of Alphatia, but extremely rare elsewhere. The fabled 'Council of 1,000 Wizards' is composed in no small part of mages who have extended their lives by use of this spell, many using it multiple times in succession; it's likely that many members of the Council still remember Old Alphatia itself.

Nice spell. The best part is the drawback, as it gives a reason for not having dozens of Immortal candidates in Alphatia.

I'd have to agree with Agathokles. I really like the flavour of this spell. It serves several purposes all at once and still maintains good balance. The only thing I'd personally add to it would be to make it a ritual type spell requiring material and lengthy recitation. Two thumbs up!

It should require the ritual use of Zzonga fruit; gullible non-magi think Zzonga lengthens the life span, but actually, it just gets you stoned unless you use this spell. Its use in this spell is one of the reasons efforts to stomp out the zzonga trade always fails.

Excellent spell! It must be tough to get to be a powerful wizard and then face the choice - attempt to gain true immortality (an almost impossible task) or settle for virtual immortality and deny your chances of truly living forever. I know which I'd go for - and a cushy place on the Council too!

I agree with the others, an excellent spell. This also adresses the problem about why so many nobles died during the Week Without Magic. I always found it a bit weird that Potions of Longevity were affected by that one. What happens with someone under the effect of this spell during the Day of Dread? Do they simply age a day or do they die instantly (assuming they already have exceeded their natural lifespan)?

Another reason why so few, even very high level characters are out searching for Immortality is IMO the risk involved. Once you have made it that far, risking everything could even more terrifying as most experienced characters lack the recklessness of their youth. Having a friend who can ressurrect you should help, but death still won't be seen as a walk in the park...
