What happens when a silt skimmer gets stuck in the deep end? Is there a book that covers silt skimmer adventures and mishaps like this?

What would a giant be willing to receive in exchange for trading away his hair?

maybe i'm misremembering, but iirc silt skimmers don't actually float. they just have big wheels. so if the skimmer goes too deep, it sinks. and then you're pretty much just screwed.

There isn’t a lot of official writing on the subject of silt skimmers. IIRC, the adventure Dragon’s Crown had the most about them.

I agree with Jaid. Unless you have a fairly powerful savant psion or a friendly giant with you, I’m not sure there is a whole lot you can do about a “grounded” skimmer.

Giants are people, too. They will trade for whatever they need just like anyone else. As the trader PC in one of my games once said, “Trading with giants is easy. Getting close enough to tell them you want to trade without catching a boulder in the face is the hard part.”

my silt skimmers are fitted with Silt Horror stomach ballons, when they are at risk of sinking the ballons are inflated and the skimmer actually floats on the silt. the ballons are located under the frame and on the axels.

i also believe that psionicists may maintain enchantments that allows the skimmers wheels to be boyant in the silt. maybe magical or elemental in nature. psionics are only one possibility.

i also have a last ditch method of detaching the wheels completely and levitating the frame and moving it via the windsail.

another cool transport in the silt are undead horrors and other large creatures. a necromantic operates them and people actually hold up in the creatures insides, which have been redesigned to hold passangers and remain survivable, filled with air. i call them siltcrawlers, but a better way to think of them is a silt submarine. they can move above or in the silt.

i think DragonKings has a write up on the silt skimmer and other vehicals on athas. i dont have my books open so im not sure.

Unless you're somehow filling up those stomach things with hydrogen, I can't see how that would work. Silt is just dust. There's nothing natural that would cause something to "float" on top of dust rather than sinking to the bottom, unless it's something that could also cause you to float into the air.

And if you've got hydrogen to help you float, that begs the question of why you were using psionics to float in the first place. It's easier to believe that someone might have a big old airtight leather bag full of hydrogen (somehow milked from floaters, perhaps) than some compressed hydrogen that one could pump into the bag. In that case, it would be good to have psionics or spells as a backup, in case of a leak. Now in case of a fire, chances are that spells and psionics would not save you, since enough hydrogen to float a skimmer is far more than enough hydrogen, once ignited, to blow a skimmer to pieces in a fraction of a second.

no hydrogen is used, just paranormal powers. the air in the ballons has an elemental quality to it which allows a cleric to inflate or deflate the ballons as needed. Or maybe it is hydrogen that the clerics fill the ballons up with. Only the clerics know.;) and yes it can float on air.not for very long, thats why it is only used in emergencies.

Ah, well if it's clerics that are inflating the things, then that's elemental magic, and I've no beef with that.

The Athasian Emporium will have rules for silt skimmers - the "float dome" type - in them, as well as for the wheely kinds (IIRC). ...beta is getting close to release...soon...and this time I mean it. ;)
