Several of my players have expressed an interest in playing Dragonlance. I have read all of the original books, right up until the War of Souls, I know the history well enough to wing it even without the books (even though I own several of them).

The problem I have is... to me, Dragonlance is the granddaddy of them all. It was Time of the Twins that got me into the fantasy genre in the first place. Better to ask me to run a Biblical campaign.

I am daunted and overwhelmed... any suggestions?

throw canon to the wind and just have fun. after speaking to many players and dm's i have come to understand that canon ruins the game for many.

find things in the canon world you like, and use them how you like. not how they are written in the novels. unless you have every single novel and every single bit of info on dragonlance ever. its pointless to try and run 100% canon.

a few changes i am going to make in my new dragonlance game i am starting.

raistlin does not enter the abyss after becoming master of past and present, he instead choses to truely become the greatest wizard krynn will ever see. fistandantilus plays a huge role in this and may possibly return to the prime plane in control of raistlins body.

Loren soth is killed as in the WoS, but he is resurrected and vows to serve the cause of good, becoming a righteous cohort of kiri jolith.

takhisis is made mortal but mina stops silvanos from slaying her. both paladine and takhisis now wonder the world of krynn as living gods. takhisis has vowed to slay paladine and trap his soul to forever torment. Paladine is seeking to stop a plague that is soley killing his old followers.

Jaymes markham unites solamnia into the first empire. he rules with compassion and honor. solamnia becomes known as the defenders of the weak and begin preparing for the war with the ogre titans and the minotaurs. they are allied with the silvanesti.

those are just a few silly things i am going to change for this game. find things that you would like to change and run with it. your players will thank you.

Agreed. I used to worry about this sort of thing with Star Wars, but what I did was find an era to game in where I could make the world my own. The current Age of Mortals era works very well for that, or you could do an alternate history after the War of Souls. You might check out Legends of the Twins for six alternate histories to play in.

Basically, think of it in terms of you writing your Dragonlance story. Here's where you want to go, here's what you want to do. It isn't canon, so it won't affect the world. It may even become an alternate reality. But it will be your own and will be your very special brand of fun.
