I know a while back I said that I was going to run a Forgotten Realms Campaign. I figured with the new one coming out soon that I would just wait for that. Now I'm planning on running a Dark Sun game. I have both the magazines that have the updates in them, as well as all the great stuff over on the athas.org website as well as a few of the older resources, but through all this, I still am having trouble figuring out where to start. I really have no idea where to start a good game. I plan on it beginning at level 3 and going to level 8. I think it will be set in Urik. I wanted to make this one a closed game, one with a definite ending. Really I'm just asking for advice, adventure ideas, anything that you guys can say would be nice. I have no idea how I want the game to begin. I think the first adventure I plan on is going to be about rescuing some people that were taken and are being held by half-giants somewhere out in the desert. The main villain is trying to gather them for some dark deed or ritual. After that I have no idea where to go. Thanks for any help.

First off, I'd give your players a taste of the harshness of the world. A great starting adventure I usually use is having the players go against raiders, while they are in a caravan traveling to the starting city for your campaign. Afterwards, give them a taste of all Dark Sun has to offer... show them the corruption of the city, harshness of the desert (you'd be surprised how crazy an adventure gets when your party runs out of water), might of defilers, and monsters of the sands. From there, then you should start them along your story arc.

Last DS game I started, it all began in an outpost northeast of Tyr. The players did not really knew about each other and were among many other peoples that were to be sold to a Vordon auction. Many important peoples from the Tyr region were there to buy good slaves. It does a good start, when you start with nothing. They were bought, along with 4 others slaves, by a young noble from Nibenay that moved them into the desert for slaves hunting sport. They had to cooperate to flee. What was fun was to see them fight with rock, wood branch and eventually some scorpion claws.

They managed to survive about 4 to 6 games that way and eventually ended up in Tyr. All the equipment they managed to gains while going to Tyr was stripped by them when they arrived to Tyr by the Templars (pre-prism pentad) and were thrown in the Tyr pit to work on the Kalak Ziggurat.

Man, about 40 hours of gameplay with nothing. Harsh world they said! :D

It was fun. They found this very new and refreshing to not find sword +1 that grow in trees and full plate armor +1 growing in your garden.

I’ll probably start the game off like you said, with raiders against their caravan. I have about another week or two before the game, so I have some time to think. One of the only problems I see, is with defilers and preservers, I don't know if any of my players want to play these, though.

Arcane casters are supposed to be rare anyway. I wouldn't worry about it. :D
