In AD&D 2nd Edition, is there any reference to how long it takes to learn a spell? I'm not talking to memorize a spell already known, that's 10 mins/spell level. I'm not talking about researching a brand new spell from scratch, that's 2 weeks/spell level. But say you find a generous wizard willing to allow you access to his spell library to learn a specific spell. He hands you his spell book, you cast Read Magic and roll your % chance to learn spell, and succeed. How long does it take? Once you've learned it, how long does it take to scribe into your own spell book? Scribing a scroll takes 1 day/spell level. But a scroll is a very specific magical item, and it seems to me that it probably takes more time than just writing the spell in your own spell book. This came up in a game I was running recently. On the spot, I ruled the following: 1 hour/spell level to learn (halved if the wizard "tutors" you) 20 mins/spell level to scribe But since then have been unable to find anything at all in the core and Players Option rule books. Now I'm dang curious! -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 2] Author : Hiryu Date : 11-03-03 07:08 PM Actually no, they don't... to my knowledge, at least. Nowhere in the core rulebooks or even in Player's Option-Spells & Magic there is a single mention to the time a wizard takes to learn a spell. Also–and PLEASE somebody correct me if I'm wrong–I don't think Wizard's Handbook, Volo's Guide to All Things Magical, The Magister nor Pages from the Sages has any information on this either. BTW, I really liked the way you ruled it, that lil gem is going to my house rules. :D -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 3] Author : DPDearing Date : 11-03-03 07:23 PM Thanks Hiryu, use it in good health. :) -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 4] Author : imayb1 Date : 11-03-03 11:22 PM Nope, the rules never actually mention this detail, as far as I know. I use 1 day/spell level to learn it, modified by the percentage roll you make to learn the spell. Eg- you have an 80% chance to learn spell and you roll 2%. You learn the spell really fast-- if 80%=100% of "normal" time, 2%= a lot less than the "normal" time it would take. I use 1 hour/spell level to write learned spells into your spellbook. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 5] Author : DPDearing Date : 11-04-03 11:05 AM Interesting take. I like the variability of it. Thanks for weighing in, imayb1. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Downloaded from Wizards Community (http://forums.gleemax.com) at 05-10-08 08:20 AM.
