After this unpleasant surprise, what are the chances of Athas.org getting their own forums so I don't have to wade through all the other settings I'm not interested in?

Of course similar questions are valid for any of the other discontinued settings.

I really hate this decision and I'm afraid there's nothing we could since this is a restriction wizards has imposed on athas.org. I guess we could write [Dark Sun] in front of our posts in order to separate them from the others...

Have you guys contacted Wizards about making your own forums? They might be open to the idea now that they've messed this up big time. Also, in the meantime, you might want to think about hosting the old sticky links on athas.org, so that they don't get lost.

I've sort of been looking into what it might take to integrate a forum into the current workup I've got going for the site.

Looks like I might seriously attempt the implementation. Pending whatever feedback from WotC. Given how many other world sites have their own forums, and how long they've had them, I don't think it's much of a problem...

I remember when my friend (Raddu) started that site so long ago it seems. I remember hanging visiting him when I was on leave once from the Air Force when he was fretting about converting to 3E. :-) We've been friends since 1990, and he ran the BEST campaign we ever played, which was the Freedom campaign, with his own personal touches. I almost always was our DM, but he ran that, and he ran it well. He was so proud when WotC wanted to make it the official Dark Sun site for their company.

I wish it would be updated to 4E. Of all the game worlds, it was the best. I have very fond memories of Dark Sun, and (spoiler?) seeing (in my mind and in the DM handout) that spear reach Kalak and end his miserable, misanthropic life and bid at immortality.

Here's his threadwhen he left town and sold all his Dark Sun stuff. Pretty sad to see him go, but we still talk from time to time. His web blog is here if anyone is interested.

I actually was the guy that bought all of Raddus' collection to complete my own. I am so sad to see this happen to our forum, I feel like the Dark Sun is truly dying now. I hardly post and never play but I still check the board every day to see what all you guys (and gals?) come up with for Athas. Seems to me that WOTC has thrown in the towel on our and several other worlds. I have hope that flip and the gang will come up with an alternative to this outrage. Bah, anyway, most of the stuff I bought from Raddu is for sale if anyone is looking for something. I only needed a few items for my collection but he was in a hurry and couldn't seperate it for me. E-mail me at lkincer at hotmail dot com if interested. I'll check back occasionally in hopes that we get our own forum again. May the Wanderer guide your steps,

We've got a pretty good community over at DragonlanceForums.com, for all you Dragonlance fans out there. Very friendly, and the authors join in on the discussions.

Ah, here we all are

Hey guys!

I've sort of been looking into what it might take to integrate a forum into the current workup I've got going for the site.

Looks like I might seriously attempt the implementation. Pending whatever feedback from WotC. Given how many other world sites have their own forums, and how long they've had them, I don't think it's much of a problem...

Good idea, Flip. Definitely worth doing. If WotC say no to an official athas.org forum, I'd say we should have our own unofficial forum. This new setup here seems a little unmanageable.

This recent change might result in me disappearing from the forum. I have no desire to filter through dozens of threads about worlds I don't care for...

Sorry, but I believe that Flip has a good chance of getting something going on Athas.org, so as interesting as your phpBB is, I'm not certain how good it will be, or how well WotC will appreciate it. I'm going to see what Flip can offer, after he confers with Wizards.

I have official approval from a wot staffer to host that forum. If this new forum goes down, it would be for bandwidth reasons (I have lots to spare, but shocking things can still happen), not legal reasons.

As I understand it, the official support sites, such as (Pandius for Mystara) have formal clauses that disallow forums to be hosted by the same web domain.

One of the gamestore owners here has his own forums and no one uses the D&D forums at all so we could go there if ppl are happy with that. I could also ask about DS specific forums if you want.

Depending on what comes of this or how things will need to be set up: flip, I'm more than willing to donate server space and such if necessary for Dark Sun specific fora. Just let me know.

I have created a forum for Dark Sun on my site. If the Dark Sun community wishes to migrate there en masse, you are more than welcome. If not, it may be nice if one of you makes a single post in that section to indicate where the DS community is moving to.

We have plans to do so. I'm working on some software for the site to support this at the moment. Is fun trying to do so with incomplete information....

Wasn't there a thread about 'stopping the insanity' well I guess WotC never read it.

The other worlds all merged into a single forum -BRILLIANT- now NOBODY can find what they are looking for, what's next Wizards?

Not sure if going to another forum is the right thing to do. If WotC is using the boards as a thermometer for setting interest (I mean, what else could they use?), and all DS fans start going to another forum, it might give the impression that no one cares anymore...

Honestly, I'd far rather the forums were kept on WotC's site too. But a point worth bearing in mind...

Just about every single one of these campaign worlds had (or claimed to have) either mailing lists or forums or both which were run offsite and beyond the eyes of WotC anyway. As such, these forums were never a reliable barometer of the popularity of any specific campaign world.

Now that WotC has done this to the board, I personally feel they are unreliable as a host for a community forum, as they have amply demonstrated that they put their convenience / profits / man-hours (delete as appropriate) above the interests of the community, and will cheerfully disrupt the community when they feel it in their interests to do so. Having a forum that is hosted by a community member avoids such a risk in future, even if WotC restores things as they were here.

From a business standpoint, using these forums as a basis for product planning is extremely short-sighted and should never even be considered a replacement for accurate market research. These forums represent such a minuscule percentage of players and certainly does not give a true picture of setting popularity.

If WotC is honestly contemplating 4E updates for any of these settings, they'll be doing some honest-to-goodness, broad-based market research. A corporation would be absolutely irresponsible not to. They simply can't afford to rely solely on what they see here.

That is starting to become a very helpful site, I can see everyone moving over there for uninterrupted discussion and posting here on the wotc boards to let those who post here know current updates and info, but re-directing any dicussion back to the above site.

This move by wotc is understandable, but is very difficult to deal with, I hate searching pages trying to find that one thread I'm looking for.;)

FYI the new site also has a home for each setting. So no one is left out! Come one, Come all!

FYI the new site also has a home for each setting. So no one is left out! Come one, Come all!

The Mystara community has embraced this site as their new 'home' but will naturally be involved in other places such as here, the Mystara Mailing List, Dragonsfoot, Enworld, etc., so I invite any other setting's communities to come and join us in a truly "Old D&D Settings" forum that allows discussion in any rules context.

Trust me, if WotC is going to evaluate possibilities in publishing new material for any of our beloved settings, they will be looking at the main forums of activity for them. Having us at one main site, in addition to the established communities, will be of visual benefit to us.

So, Dark Sun fans, please join us in our Old World Renaissance.
