alternative forums

Well, I've made initial enquiries to WotC about setting up an alternative home for forums of the legacy campaign worlds.

Their policy seems to be only high-traffic areas get boards, which is a shame, but it would make my hosting options simpler.

I am, of course, waiting for formal approval from WotC before I start up a new forum on a different site, but I suspect if allowed, one restriction WotC would make is that there be no discussion of adaptation/conversion to 4th edition rules in such forums.

If approved, I would hope to host a place for discussion of the following campaign worlds:

d20 Modern (and its spin-offs), Mystara, Greyhawk, DragonLance, Spelljammer, al-Qadim, Planescape, Dark Sun, Eberron, Forgotten realms.

Who is with me?

Actually, I've been considering a similar idea. A set of message boards for the various worlds of TSR, including some long-ignored ones like Star Frontiers.

That being said, I've spoken with Mike Lescault (Gamer Zero) in the past, and he talks like fan sites are perfectly okay. I think you might be waiting forever and a day for approval. Remember the old saying, "It's better to ask forgiveness than approval."

So let's coordinate efforts here.

I was thinking... since WoTC manifested interest in adapting/converting the old TSR classic out of print worlds (Dark Sun, Dragon Lance, Ravenloft, etc.) to 4e, maybe, the real purpose of this outragerous forum merge was exactly to disband our communities, to discourage our discussions and hamper our common efforts about converting these old settings to 4e.

In sum, I have a strong feeling that WoTC don´t want a band of fans releasing a free 4e conversion of any of its Out of Print Worlds, before the WoTC itself releases then officially.

I like what I am hearing here guys! I definately think joining forces is a good idea here. While some obscure settings might not have enough of a fan base to warrant their own sub-forum even in a new place, I definately think the ones that used to have a home here should be given a new place and I would have no problems with opening trial forums for others as well.

An open and including attitude need to be the basis of such a venture.

Have we considered looking into the existing such forums like PlanetAD&D and Worlds of D&D? Or would starting something fresh be a better idea?

I wonder if they would actually have a legal basis for trying to stop something like this on a privately owned forum.

However, on the official Fansites for each setting, something like this would have to be obeyed.

I dont feel any need to try to go against the will of WotC however. All I would like to see is a new home for my favorite setting. If it means keeping 4e conversions here, I'd be fine with that, but I think all editions prior to that should at least be allowed.

IIRC, both places have some of the superstructure we're thinking about, but none have the full structure. You could ask Worlds of D&D if they would consider expanding their forums. Their setup isn't too bad at all.

Their setup used to be more like what we have been talking about but the forums dedicated to other worlds have been buried deep due to pretty much complete lack of activities.

OTOH, I received an email from them recently asking for donations to keep the site going which might not be a good sign...

Looks good to me. I am curious to seeing what fans of settings other than Mystara think

Looks kind of like what I had in mind. ;)

First, my question is...what is the mission statement? Are you providing boards for worlds that no longer have a home (i.e. not FR or Eberron)? Are you providing a home for TSR's old worlds? Or is it a home for all of the D&D settings (including FR and Eberron)?

I recommend getting some flavor text for all of the various worlds, rather than have "Discuss X here." I'm sure this is very much a work in progress, and that you probably haven't gotten to that point yet.

Will you be providing a home for Maztica, Star Frontiers, Kara-Tur/Oriental Adventures, etc.?

Also, I don't know if you can set up links in the descriptions or have a links page, but some links to the various fan sites would be great.

If you're not going to include the Realms or Eberron, you may just want to take off Dragonlance as well. We have a pretty good community over at www.dragonlanceforums.com

Also, I don't know if the software would support it, but maybe see about some D&D-ish art. The cover of TSR Jam maybe?

Finally, consider a good URL. I was going to register tsrworlds.com myself, but with this initiative going, maybe it would be good if you gave it a try.

Anyway, I hope that helps. Just thought I'd throw some ideas out there.

Same thing with Ravenloft as for Dragonlance - there is already a well frequented fan web site at the Fraternity of Shadows. But you can link us of course, and we would be happy to do the same for your new communities.

Hmmm..
depending on how this goes, maybe reorganizing the whole thing into a Mystara centered forum with a few house guests for those few settings who actually dont have their own forum elsewhere would be better?

I'd wait till over the weekend and see who signs up and what everyone wants before making any final decisions though.

I don't have any immediate plans to make a FR or Eberron board, as WotC is still supporting them with their own forum, unlike DL. I will entertain requests for a forum for any campaign world, however.
