(Rolled up using "Basic" character creation, without fudging) Name: Theobald Weatherby Fighter Align: Neutral Str: 15 Int: 11 Wis: 13 Dex: 10 Con: 16 Chr: 9 HP: 8 +1 to hit, damage, open doors +1 on magic-based saves +2 per hit die Leather armor, mace, regular dagger Started with 80gp. Wanted to try for a Halfling Thief but the Dex wasn't high enough and I didn't want to sacrifice any other scores. No background info, yet. He may become an NPC for my son's adventures. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 2] Author : Hiryu Date : 12-05-03 03:15 PM Very nice! You got some really good rolls there. Hmmm... I look at the stats and for some reason I think of a middle aged dwarven fighter o.o -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 3] Author : spray paint affiliate Date : 12-06-03 05:08 AM as an 'old skool' basic/ad&d player, i still catch myself rolling abilities in the order as billchamb STR/INT/WIS/DEX/CON/CHR instead of the 3.5 way of doing things. old habits die hard i guess. *still unbelieving that I6 is 20 years old* -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 4] Author : diaglo Date : 12-08-03 03:04 PM Originally posted by spray paint affiliate as an 'old skool' basic/ad&d player, i still catch myself rolling abilities in the order as billchamb STR/INT/WIS/DEX/CON/CHR 1edADnD too. but Original D&D(1974) was Str, Int, Wis, Con, Dex, Cha -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 5] Author : kgiggles Date : 12-08-03 03:04 PM Thread Title : Old School Me too.... I don`t even remember how the abilities are listed now, and I still play. :) -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 6] Author : billchamb Date : 12-08-03 03:06 PM Hiryu, I'm curious...a middle-aged dwarven fighter? I guess I (perhaps foolishly) consider 1st level characters of any type to be young and inexperienced, not necessarily middle-aged and suddenly becoming an adventurer. Please don't get me wrong, I like your suggestion and when I first rolled I thought about a dwarf. Odd observation...although the Basic character creation is fairly simple and straightforward, when I delved into it, the short-sightedness of it became apparent. Fighters, Thieves and Clerics are all identified as humans, although the rulebook states humans are not the majority of population. I take from that the notion of a halfling-thief or a dwarven cleric wasn't planned for. I rolled several other characters, but I've yet to get an adventure going. Bill not shortsighted. more historically oriented. based on the ORiginal D&D booklets and Chainmail. dwarven clerics are not adventurers. they stay with the community. thus are NPCs. the rules in the book are for generating PCs. not NPCs. that is left up to the DM. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 8] Author : Hiryu Date : 12-09-03 05:58 PM Basically, the high Con and Str, coupled with the slightly bellow average Cha and regular Dex made it look to me like it fit into the dwarven mold. His Wis is above average, so the character must have had quite a few life experiences. Since you said you were considering him for an NPC, I thought it would be just fine if he was middle aged to reflect his Wis. As for characters always starting in their younger years, I think that is a litle restrictive. There is no reason why a character shouldn't begin their carreers later in life. There is the middle age crisis to keep in mind. They didn't have cars back then, and in a fantasy world, I think the best example of the middle age crisis would be to become an adventurer. It's dangerous, it's considered a young and energetic activity, it gives prestige... all things a racing car does to modern man. Also, many events could turn a grown man or woman into an adventurer. Following on the middle aged dwarven fighter example, probably his community was destroyed and seized by orgs, goblins or other underdark races–a common dwarven story–and was forced to live on the road for a while. Maybe he tried his luck at opening a blacksmithing shop on the surface and his business flopped or was taken by the crown for delayed taxes. It could be that one of his relatives, maybe his beloved first born, was abducted and he is on a quest to find him. Perhaps he is on a quest for his king to find a long-lost relic, and was picked because of his expertise or for being a respected member of his community. I could keep pitching ideas at you all day long. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 9] Author : billchamb Date : 12-10-03 09:42 AM You keep pitchin', I'll keep readin'! Thanks for the great ideas! I guess I'M the one too short-sighted to look at it the way you had. Now that I've thought about it, if I, at the ripe old age of 37 suddenly became an adventurer I would definitely be 1st level whatever...not exactly young as you pointed out. I would "evolve" from being an NPC to a 1st level something-or-other, but hopefully with some WIS and INT. Thanks again for your perspective! Bill -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 10] Author : Hiryu Date : 12-10-03 02:47 PM Hey, you are very welcome Bill. I don't think you were being short-sighted, but were being a victim of the proverbial force of habit. After all, the books asume all starting characters should be on their teens. I don't know, I just like to think players and DM's should feel creatively free to try whatever they want for their characters and NPC's. After all, if all characters were cliché after cliché the game would get boring pretty fast, IMHO. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Downloaded from Wizards Community (http://forums.gleemax.com) at 05-10-08 08:19 AM.
