Therefore I am looking for new and exciting ways to spice up this campaign world. For example, wizards and wizardresses are called witches and warlocks and they are considered to be incredibly evil, and the practice of "magic" is outlawed, except for clerical powers which is no longer called magic, it is called "miracles". Aside from topical application of change, I am looking to go a little bit further. For example, instead of making "bless crops" a spell, I am simply expanding the powers of bless to cover crops. So the level 1 bless spell, can be used to give modifiers to ability scores, but it can also cause crops to improve its yields by 6-15% (1d10%+5). Businesses that are "blessed" will increase their profit the same way. The more powerful "prayer" spell, increases crops and business by 16-25 percent for 1 month (1d10%+15%). These spells will not be culmative in their secondary applications. This doesnt mean that businesses will instantly prosper, maybe these spells will be used to improve economic conditions (for example, if the local economy is doing poor (crops producing 5-20% less) a prayer spell might help the crops produce average yields). As far as I can see, priest spells will be the best candidates for this types of modifications (because they often do not produce "visible" effects, instead adjust modifiers accordingly). But there may be some wizard spells that can do this. Cause Disease for example, can be used to spread a blight on crops and cattle. If you have any spell that you think can be "expanded" for other than combat purposes, drop a line here. I'd be interested in hearing any ideas.
