There's a soft place in my heart for the Basic D&D setting, mostly earned by the excellent Gazetteer books produced back in the day.

I am, however, pretty ignorant of the modules that were produced back then. Seeing as a lot (if not all) of that stuff is available for sale cheap as .pdfs, I was wondering if there were any opinions on which D&D modules I should consider buying first. I'd also be really interested in the opinions of why you think it's a classic.

While we're at it, which ones would y'all recommend I stay away from?

My favourite would probably be B10 Night's Dark Terror. It is a campaign unto itself really. X1 Isle of Dread is a classic.

It was the gazetteers that won me over as well so I can relate with you easily.

Also, look on this thread for a whole lot more information. You might want to have a look at The Piazza's Classic D&D forum for discussion with others that love Basic D&D.

One of my favorites was Rahasia, the adventure is pretty brutal for it's level to be honest, but I really enjoyed some of the puzzles (and the group i first played it through with.)

I'd agree with Hugin: B10 Night's Dark Terror is the best of them. I also like B7 Rahasia, B6 Veiled Society, B4 Lost City, B12 Queen's Harvest and DDA1 Arena of Thyatis among the basic level adventures.
Almost all the expert level adventures (X1 Isle of Dread, X2 Castle Amber, etc) are great.
Of the Companion and Master modules, CM1 Test of the Warlords is recommended. The other modules are of varying interest -- some are very good and add to the setting, like Talons of Night.

BTW, you can find a number of reviews in the review site.

I really liked the gazeteer series as well. Of the old school modules, I had very few but I liked In seach of the Unknown, Keep on the Borderlands, the Lost City and Isle of Dread.

That's my favorite list... I would add Master of the Desert Nomads and Temple of Death to that.

I have an expert level adventure called Quest for the Heartstone with characters from the D&d cartoon and Shady Dragon Inn (i.e. Strongheart and Warduke). Is this adventure set in Mystara?

Depends on how you want to look at it. Many of us regard all modules for the Classic D&D line to be affilliated with Mystara. A popular location for Ghyr, the kingdom from that module is Norwold, though a couple of different places in Norwold have been suggested.

A fan-made gazetteer for Ghyr (set in Mystara) can be found in this thread.
