Just finished this book tonight. I thought it was pretty good. The only thing that confused me was some of the mentions of Blackmoor, which could have been explained better I think.

I liked the adventuring party a lot, even if they were a little cliched. I kinda wish the main character had not been tuned into a mage, warrior and cleric. That semed a bit much. Too powerful, but then he did have to take on dragons single-handed so I guess it made sense in the end.

Looking forward to the next book in the trilogy.

Dragonlord was generally well received by the community in part because it was the first Mystara novel written by a guy who obviously knew the setting quite well (as opposed to the Penhaligon Chronicles, which often seemed a little shoehorned into Mystara).

Many of the issues you raise about the novel will make more sense once you read the other two books.

If you haven't already, I really recommend checking out The Black Vessel, which is probably the very best Mystara novel ( set on the Savage Coast).

Wow, I thought I was the only one who thought that! I remember finishing The Black Vessel and coming away extremely impressed. And I mean honestly satisfied in the way good fantasy can leave you but good game fiction still doesn't fulfill. The Black Vessel did for me. I had put that one in storage a few years ago and had forgotten all about it . . . I think I'll go dig it out and place it in my "on deck" shelf.

Reading positive comments about the Dragonlord series will probably get me to read that soon, for some reason I never could get started.

well I got to book 2. Not really entirely sure how I feel about the main character being a dragon or his dragon companion also being the elf from book 1. If the elf had been developed on her own maybe...

I think there are some good ideas in this series that is hampered by some bad development.

For instance, I'm not sure what the point of the girl dragon leaving mysteriously, the main character going off to rescue Sir George and then the girl dragon showing up with her brother in two with an army of dragons to take out the same group that the main character is fighting. I thought that was rather pointless.

Its interesting to read comments as you are reading these books. I havent read them in ages. Your comments seem to confirm what I seemed to remember that the main quality of this trilogy is that they were written by someone who was very familiar with the setting, so much that he was able to draw on so many different aspects of Mystara and use them in his novels.

BTW, I have been making some new effort in contacting the author in order to perhaps do an interview with him. We shall see if I get anywhere...
