I'm given to understand that there never was a "Mystara campaign setting sourcebook" or equivalent text, just a series of "gazettes" describing different regions of the setting. (I bought a copy of the Red Steel box, which is what sparked my interest...) Where should I look to get a "beginner's introduction" to Mystara? And should I stop putting "scare quotes" in every sentence? Thank you in advance for pointing me in the right direction.

I'd check out the Newbie Guide. The Poor Wizard's Almanacs are also good at providing an overview of the setting. Beyond that I recommend picking up the gazetteers. If buying all of them sounds a little steep, pick the ones you find most interesting based on what you read in the newbie guide. They are all excellent books though. Poking around on the Vaults of Pandius will also give you alot of info.

Welcome to Mystara!

PS: Feel free to visit us on the Piazza (URL in my sig) where there are plenty of more Mystara fans to talk to

My interest in Mystara began with Red Steel as well even though I owned the BECMI boxes from long before. I backed in to Mystara from Red Steel getting the PWAs and then Champions of Mystara and Wrath of the Immortals immediately after. From there I went on an eBay spree collecting every Gazetteer, Hollow World product, and adventure (except two!). Even snagged a copy of each trail map in a local FLGS.

I'd second all of Havard's recommendations. The PWAs are brilliant as overviews. While the Vaults can be overwhelming to a neophyte they are an excellent resource to refer to once you decide on a topic to research.
