I could always convert them from 1E, no prob, but it's actually the martial arts rules I don't care for. 1E martial arts were okay, but not great; 2E rules were terrible. Does anyone have a good system? -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 2] Author : Karn1 Date : 02-22-04 05:58 PM well i dont remember exactly the name of the book, but there is actually a monk in 2e edition..in priest book? -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 3] Author : Wyrmbane Date : 02-22-04 06:13 PM I could swear there is a 2e monk someplace, but I can't think of where it is. I think it might be in the Priest's Handbook, but don't quote me on that. As far as marial arts go, have you looked in the Combat Options and Tactics book? I believe they have some better martial arts rules there. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 4] Author : Nanosecond Date : 02-22-04 08:01 PM The Complete Priest's Handbook contained the fighting monk kit and the martial arts rules I hate so much. I'd rather have the monk as a separate class. I saw the Player's Option boks, but I wasn't impressed with the way they did the martial arts either. I guess I'm looking for a series of maneuvers a PC can learn as he goes up in level. I'd also apply this to armed combat, so warriors (fighter, paladin, ranger) can have their own set of maneuvers as well. The Complete Fighter's Handbook has that; I'm just looking for suggestions as to how to let a PC learn them gradually. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 5] Author : Karn1 Date : 02-22-04 09:55 PM nothing to do with the way they specialise but a little input well maybe an idea for you.. my gm allow to continually specialize in hand fighting (dont know how to say it) like put 6 point in hand so your bonus is 3 time more than normal specialization... -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 6] Author : Hiryu Date : 02-22-04 10:42 PM If it is official material you are talking about, I believe that the best monk version comes from Player's Option - Spells & Magic. It is almost identical to that of the priest's handbook, but he has a lot more flavor, I think. As for the martial arts, the best 2ed system I have seen is from The Complete Ninja's Handbook, which is mostly a reworked, cleaned and expanded version of Oriental Adventures' martial arts system. This system includes different martial arts forms (from ninjutsu to sumo wrestling), each with different bonuses and special moves. You learn the moves by using weapon proficiency slots (or 2 CP's each for the Skills & Powers people). You should definitetly check out both books for all your monk-related needs. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 7] Author : Nanosecond Date : 02-22-04 11:00 PM Thanks to all of you for your suggestions. I will look at those sources. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 8] Author : Wyrmbane Date : 02-23-04 03:04 AM You could always let him specialize per the Combat Options and Tactics for open hand fighting. Just consider his hands to be his weapon, and he can put the weapon slots into that. Eventually he'll be a Grand Master with his hands. Combine that with the martial arts rules out of the Ninga's Handbook (forgot about that one!), and you should have what you're looking for. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 9] Author : realmaster Date : 02-23-04 03:40 AM Originally posted by Hiryu As for the martial arts, the best 2ed system I have seen is from The Complete Ninja's Handbook, which is mostly a reworked, cleaned and expanded version of Oriental Adventures' martial arts system. I played an elven monk using some of the ninjas handbook and some info out of a couple of dragon magazines. I think my monk had a nice variety of abilities but stayed even with the rest of the party. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 10] Author : Redthorne Date : 02-23-04 04:04 PM Thread Title : 2nd ed Monk I ended up creating my own rules for a 2nd ed monk. I didn't really care for the 2nd ed Priest/Monk kit. My Monk has specific level by level hand-to-hand combat stats, AC increases, speed increases, and bonus skills (act as +1 weapon at X level, resist poison at X level, resist charm at X level, heal self at X level, etc). One of the guys in my campaign really wanted to play a monk so I spent a few days creating the class. He has really turned out to be a great, well-balanced character, too. He scores a lot of hits, but does not do large ammounts of damage. I have set up the kit so that he has more attacks and does more damage as he goes up in level. He is somewhat similar to the 1st ed monk, but with better hand-to-hand combat and fewer bonus skills. try making your own kit - it's lots of fun! -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 11] Author : Eric Anondson Date : 02-23-04 08:04 PM The Greyhawk accessory called The Scarlet Brotherhood, by Sean Reynolds actually as 2nd edition version of the monk and assassin classes.
