I lived for D&D from about '77-'84, then started college and haven't cracked open my PHB ever since. About six months ago, I was feeling nostalgic and decided to Google 'Tomb of Horrors', my all-time favorite adventure. I was stunned to learn that a sequel, 'Return to the Tomb of Horrors,' had been released and had since gone OOP. I found a copy on eBay and snatched it up. Looks like a few things have changed since '84. Hell, I can't even find a couple of the supplements mentioned by RttToH, such as 'The Complete Book of Necromancers.' I'm once again in college and don't have a whole lot of discretionary income. Can someone please tell me what products I'll need to buy to DM the Tomb? I suspect that a simple li'l booklet that converts my old rules (I still have 'em all) would be insufficient. But would even an investment in the standard rules (still PHB, DMG, and MM, right?) be enough? -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 2] Author : Magespawn Date : 03-03-04 02:06 AM I would suggest buying the core rule on disc and the expansion to. it would save you a lot of time and money, and it would have everything you would need, the only thing it doesn't have is the Necromancers Handbook but Wizards of the Coast has a site where you can down load it for free if you have the core rules discs. :) -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 3] Author : diaglo Date : 03-03-04 12:37 PM return to the tomb of horrors is a 2edADnD product. so you will need either the Core Rules CD and the expansion or purchase the 2edADnD DMG, PHB, and Monstrous Manuals. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 4] Author : Thailfi Date : 03-03-04 01:03 PM I would go with the 2e base books. That is all you really need (other than dice, pencils, graph paper, and maybe minis and a battlemat). Do a search on Ebay for things like Monstrous Compendium, Players Handbook, and Dungeon Masters Guide. You will get dozens of hits on each. With some smart shopping, you could probably grab all three books, plus a few Monstrous Compendium supplements for under $50 total including shipping. This is all your really need for the module as all new spells and creatures are covered in the dungeon. There are plenty of worthwhile supplements and you might want to go to a site called svgames and browse there D&D OOP downloads to see what you missed. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 5] Author : Wyrmbane Date : 03-03-04 08:23 PM Ditto everyone else. The Necromancer's Handbook will be the one big kicker. Good news here though, if you're lucky enough to find the Core Rules CD (even luckier to find the Expansion), you can download the Necromancer's Handbook for that. For some reason, that book is hard to find. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 6] Author : Xoynx Date : 03-07-04 01:40 AM Thread Title : Core rules CD Okay, so tell me about this core rules CD. Which edition is it for? Does WotC sell it directly, or should I hunt it down on eBay? BTW, thanks all for your feedback--much appreciated. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 7] Author : Bladesinger Date : 03-07-04 02:19 AM The AD&D Core Rules 2.0 CD has the three main AD&D books (players handbook, DMG, and monster manual) plus several others in HTML and RTF (rich text file) format. It's got the player's option rules, the complete book of fighters, dwarves, etc., so it should have pretty much everything you'd need for AD&D. The CD is out of print, so you'd have to look on Ebay for it, but it shouldn't be impossible to find. I got a copy from Ebay about four months ago for $45. It's useful being able to search for specific info from the books or print out certain sections for easy reference, and I like it much better than printed books. It also has programs to print out character sheets, make maps, etc., which come in handy as well. One think to keep in mind is that the first version, Core Rules 1.0, had only the three main rulebooks I think, and apparently had some bugs in the program too. So make sure you get the Core Rules 2.0 and the expansion disk (which I think come together as a set), rather than the 1.0 version. Another thing to point out is that, since the books are on the CD in HTML or RTF format, they don't have the pictures included. The only exception is the monster manual, which fortunately does include picture files. So if you can find it, it will be well worth the cost. Printed copies of the three core rulebooks were something like $100 or so new, probably half of that used, and since there's something like 20 books on the CD its a great deal. So if you can find a copy it is definately the best way to get the rules. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 8] Author : Wyrmbane Date : 03-07-04 12:01 PM I think the expansion was seperate, but I could be wrong. It's been a while since I got mine. It has all the brown books, except for the Ninja's and Barbarian's. The Necromancer's Handbook is still availible for download however. A nice bonus. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 9] Author : nolanjwerner Date : 03-07-04 05:48 PM Thread Title : Re: Essentials for 'Return to the Tomb'? I could photocopy a few pages if need be (if you only need like 3 spells or something). If you live in Chicago you are more then welcome to come and take a look at my copy. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 10] Author : Thailfi Date : 03-08-04 12:03 AM I forgot one thing that is definitely essential to running Return to the Tomb of Horrors. I lost a few characters on that one. :weep: -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 12] Author : Wyrmbane Date : 03-08-04 01:54 AM I refuse to run that one again. Oh well, it is really hard to quantify anyway since you guys made so much noise with your spiked chains on their armor and seem to have brought several more boat-loads down on you. I'm really having a hard time seperating the various encounters out here, Custer. For simplicity's sake, we'll just call each time a party-member dies the end of an encounter and factor the xp from there." We did find a way to make a climactic part all themore easy for us..... S P O I L E R S P A C E There was the whole thing with the gate that transported you back to the beginning without any gear? Well...there was also a gate that transported you directly into Acerak's lair. We had a 15th level Psion with us when we got transported to the beginning without any stuff. So he decided to get even. He tossed his Psicrystal into the portal that sent it to Acerak's lair...since essentially it was a gem Acerak paid it little attention, the Psion could see what the crystal saw....and teleport it back and forth as it grabbed as much treasure as it could....so we geared up. Then we teleported right on into Acerak's lair and defeated him with his own treasure.....that was most satisfying after having been killed by the adventure three times!!! -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 17] Author : Algolei Date : 03-15-04 01:42 AM Thread Title : Re: Core rules CD Originally posted by Xoynx Okay, so tell me about this core rules CD. Which edition is it for? Does WotC sell it directly, or should I hunt it down on eBay? I'd really just go with the three main rulebooks in hardcopy form. While the core rules CD gives you more, it's inconvenient to use on a computer--even a laptop--when you and your players all need to look different things up at the same time. Books can be passed around much easier. As for the Necromancer's Handbook: Well, I don't know how much of it is needed (don't own Return to the Tomb of Horrors myself) but it can't be that much. You could either ignore it or.... Hey! Hey guys! Isn't the Necromancer's Handbook available somewhere as a free download? I think I've got it on my old computer somewhere, and that thing only has free downloads on it because I could't afford to buy anything when I was running it. If that's the case, it had to have been offered as a free download somewhere. (And no, I didn't download it illegally. I had no idea how to do that back then. Plus, that would have been wrong.) -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Downloaded from Wizards Community (http://forums.gleemax.com) at 05-10-08 08:21 AM.
