My group consists of four friends whom I've ben gaming with for many years. A new player has just joined our group, my friend's 12 year old son. This is his first time playing an RPG. The character's consist of 2 Humans, a Vrusk, a Dralasite, and a Yazirian. For the first session last week I started them with the 2 scenarios that are in the back of the Basic game book so they could get a handle on how the game system worked. I used the Expanded game rules and gave them some XPs and money for completing them. We had our next session last night and they started the Crash on Volturnus adventure. Everybody but the Vrusk, played by my friend's son, escaped from the starliner that was hijacked by pirates in one of the lifeboats. The Vrusk was killed when he ran to the bridge where the weapons locker was located by himself. He discovered that the locker was destroyed and 2 pirates and the pirate captain where there on the bridge. The pirates then shot him full holes. The other characters were still dealing with pirates by the passenger cabins and could not get to him in time to save him. We ended the session with the remaining characters escaping in the lifeboat. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 2] Author : beavis123 Date : 03-16-04 01:41 PM Thread Title : Good to hear I am glad to hear that your game is going well. I run a PBEM Star Frontiers game, which i would love to keep everyone up to date with. I think others playing these games in the out of print section could share the general updates of their games. I think it would be very positive. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 3] Author : DarthRicker Date : 03-16-04 02:20 PM Thread Title : Post updates Post updates on you game. I would like to hear how other Star Frontiers games are going. Who knows, may be we'll generate enough interest that WotC will publish Star Frontiers as a supplement for the new D20 Future. ;) -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 4] Author : Qui-Gon Jinn Date : 03-18-04 06:40 AM I started playing Star Frontiers over 20 years ago. I liked it very much. My brother did most of the GMing. I usually played a Vrusk. We only played the Alpha Dawn rules, but we had lots of fun. We were constantly making up newer and more powerful weapons to combat the Sathar warbots, which were also getting more powerful. We based many of our weapons on the Star Wars movies (the WEG Star Wars RPG hadn't been released yet). My favorites were the lightsaber and the nuclear accelerator (the Ghostbusters laser guns). ;) -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 5] Author : DarthRicker Date : 03-18-04 10:50 AM The reason I got into Star Frontiers as a kid was because there was no Star Wars RPG at the time. Then Star Frontiers was discontinued but a couple years later WEG released Star Wars and I was all over that.:) -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 6] Author : beavis123 Date : 03-23-04 09:31 AM Thread Title : My concern Star Wars works as a sci-fi game as long as you are a Jedi or involved in the empire struggle. Or than that, it's a bust. I love the movies, but it's a little thin as a genre. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 7] Author : DarthRicker Date : 03-25-04 09:08 AM Thread Title : Campaign Update Our next session was last night. My friend's son rolled up a new character. He created another Vrusk. I added him to the group by saying he was another passenger on the starliner and was in the escape bay when the other characters arrived and he got in the lifeboat with them. The session started with the lifeboat crashing on the planet Volturnus (hence the name of the module, though the players didn't know this) in the middle of a desert. They then divided up the survival gear and then headed east towards a stone well they saw. They investigated the well a little bit and tried the water that was in it. The water was arsenic but the two characters who tried it did not drink enough of it to be poisoned. The rest of the session was them travelling across the desert and them worry about running out of water. They had a couple encounters with funnel worms and the pirate jetcopter that flew over them. The session ended with them making friendly contact with the Ul-Mor. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 8] Author : beavis123 Date : 03-25-04 11:19 AM Thread Title : did they find the Did they find the Lopers???? How are they doing with the survey adventure turned survival mission? That hurt the adventure when I played it. Everyone wanted to explore the planet, not just survive. Once we were "rescued", we went around exploring the planet. It was fun. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 9] Author : DarthRicker Date : 03-25-04 11:54 AM They didn't run into the Lopers. They've adjusted to the way their survey mission has turned to survival. One of the players, after reading the description for the all-weather blanket, decided to use the extra blankets to collect water from the dew over night. Shortly before they met the Ul-Mor they were starting to worry about running out of water. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 10] Author : MikeJW Date : 03-26-04 07:53 PM This thread brings back some memories. I remember playing this adventure back in the 5th grade (@'83-84). This is one of my favorite adventures of any RPG for some reason. I rememeber playing it on the bus while going on a field trip. I dont remember the field trip but I remember the session pretty clearly.I wish I still had my SF stuff:( -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 11] Author : beavis123 Date : 03-26-04 08:59 PM Thread Title : check out sci-fi I updated Star Frontiers to D20 to do a PBEM. check it out under D20 sci-fi. You do have the other 2 Volturnus modules, right? If not, Dragonstrove has copies for so-so prices. They also have some setds of the old SF minis. http://www.dragonstrove.com/nonadnd.html I adapted the modules for Star Wars (d6) about a year before d20 came out. We had a blast!! My players seemed to be enjoying the game so far. I think it's a good change of pace from D&D 3E. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 14] Author : DarthRicker Date : 03-31-04 12:59 PM Thread Title : Campaign Update #2 Our next session was last night. It didn't really go that well. My friend's son, the vrusk, started acting like a little jerk. Whenever the other players would be fighting an alien creature with their melee weapons he would stand back and use his laser pistol even though he was warned that if he missed he might hit one of the other characters. The other characters would use their machetes because they could hit better and do more damage than with the laser pistols. The vrusk, who was not very good with a laser pistol, "accidently" shot one of the other characters twice. After that he still kept using the pistol because he thought it was funny that he shot one of the other characters. I told him he wasn't helping the group and that they have to work together if they want to survive. The player who was shot set his pistol on 10 in case he "accidently" shoots the vrusk. I also awarded the vrusk less XPs than the other characters for not contributing in a helpful manner. Anyways, the Ul-Mor led the characters to the Forbidden Caves so they could travel across the Burning Lands. Of course there is a cave-in which seperates the characters from the Ul-Mor and they must make their way through the caverns themselves. After a couple run ins with some alien creatures they made their way to the cave with the lake of lava with crystals sticking out. I went pretty easy on them in this room because I thought it was a little extreme for beginning characters. If I hadn't, everybody would have died there. They then made it to the underground lake and that's were we stopped. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 15] Author : beavis123 Date : 03-31-04 01:10 PM Thread Title : The lake of lava Yes, what fun that is!! Miss the intial roll, and head toward the lava. Miss the second roll and you are a crispy critter. I also had to modify it or alot of characters would have died. Jerky little players are always fun, aren't they?? -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 16] Author : WSmith Date : 04-05-04 12:34 PM This sounds like a lot of fun. I might go out to my FLGS to pick up that old battered SF set he has for sale. ;) -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 17] Author : beavis123 Date : 04-30-04 06:09 AM Thread Title : Any update What happened in the game? looking to hear some more -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 18] Author : DarthRicker Date : 04-30-04 03:06 PM Thread Title : Campaign Update #3 We had another session Wed. night. 3 of the players work in restaurants or retail, so finding a night that everybody has off can be difficult. Anyways, they decided to use the lifejackets they got from the survival packs to swim across the underground lake. They got halfway across and were attacked by the jawfish. They managed to fend it off with their machetes and make it to the opposite side. They then made their way to the cavern were the Eorna heals them and then erases their memory of itself. All they know is that they have been healed somehow. They then found the deranged maintenance robot and one of the humans shut it down and then repaired it. He decided to keep it. Next they encountered the lone pirate and took him out. The other human grabbed the pirate's laser rifle. Finally, they made it out of the caverns and regrouped with the Ul-Mor. The Ul-Mor then took them to the Place of True Warriors were they fought the quickdeath. They didn't have that much of a problem with the quickdeath. One of the humans has 81 STR and level 2 in Melee Weapons and the other has a 65 STR. They were pretty effective with their machetes. Now that they were members of the tribe the Ul-Mor informed them that they have seen others of their kind living with the Kurabanda and would provide an escort to the forest were the Kurabanda live. That is were we ended. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 19] Author : beavis123 Date : 05-01-04 06:42 AM Thread Title : good update My group is playing a techno spy thriller adventure of my own design. There were three characters intially, a Human enforcer, a Yazirian scispec, and a Dralasite techex. They all attended the funeral of Capt Zac Judirel, a famous spacer and frontier explorer who worked for Streel Corp and Pan Galactic during his career. After overhearing an argument between a dralasite and human, the dralasite stranger hired them to check out a few hunches for him. I will keep you updated!! -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 20] Author : GreyLord Date : 05-02-04 06:30 PM By XPH you mean the knight Hawks rules. Hmm, I know of the Alpha Dawn Rule set The Knight Hawks rule set And the Zebulon's Guide. I almost always have played the Alpha Dawn Rule set. I've tried the Zebulon's Guide ruleset, but didn't care for it much, hence afterwards have always stuck to Alpha Dawn instead. Is there another ruleset I don't know about? Or do I just need to look at my books more closely after all this time? -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 21] Author : DarthRicker Date : 05-02-04 06:43 PM Thread Title : Ruleset I got Zebulon's Guide off of eBay. I didn't care for the rules in it after I read it. So I'm just sticking to Alpha Dawn and Knight Hawks. I do have the Dragon Magazine CD Archive and there are some interesting articles for Star Frontiers. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 22] Author : beavis123 Date : 05-02-04 07:19 PM Thread Title : i liked Zebulon's guide with the idea of comstomizing my character. The old PSA's were too bulky. In my D20 update I have the following classes: Enforcer, Explorer, Scispec, Techex, Scoundrel, Fringer, Traveler, Barbarian, Mystic Martial Artist, and Mentalist. There are 42 skills and 82 feats. The old Body Speak skill for Enforcers in Zeb's became a starting bonus feat for 1st level Enforcers. The conversion process was fun. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 23] Author : DarthRicker Date : 05-03-04 09:32 AM Thread Title : Zeb's Guide I just didn't like using that colored coded chart for skill and combat resolutions. Since three of the five players had never played Star Frontiers before and one of them had never played an RPG before, I decided to keep things simple and just use Alpha Dawn. Everyone seems to like the simplicity after our D&D 3E campaign. I'll intergrate Knight Hawks later as they get more skilled. I've already showed them what skills they will need if they want a spaceship skill. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 24] Author : beavis123 Date : 05-04-04 08:19 AM Thread Title : I've read that alot Alot of people did not care for the resolution system of Zebulon's Guide. It is similiar to Marvel Super Heroes. You could eventually go to the customization rules of Zebuloon's guide and keep the dice rolling of Alpha Dawn..just a thought. One of the worst rules of Alpha Dawn was the Yazirian battle rage. Although known for fists of rage, Yazirians had a -10 Strenght/Stamina. Not exactly Wookie like!! Then only 5% to go into rage with melee or martial arts. You could use your xp more wisely advancing melee skill or martial arts and gain more than a +20%. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 25] Author : DarthRicker Date : 05-13-04 04:53 PM Thread Title : Campaign Update #4 Our latest session was last night. We started the next module, Volturnus, Planet of Mystery. After a few days travel the group made it to the forest were the Kurabanda live, a race of monkey-like beings. They found a group of 5 Kurabanda fighting against 10 space pirates. After a pretty fierce fight 4 of the Kurabanda were killed. Also, the vrusk and one of the humans were killed. The yazirian, who has the medic skill, was able to revive the human but did not make it to the vrusk in time. Looks like next time my friend's son will be making another character. They did manage to kill 6 of the pirates before the rest got away. It was a pretty long battle, so that was all we were able to do. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 26] Author : beavis123 Date : 05-13-04 07:30 PM Thread Title : good update I recently got Dark Side of the Moon on ebay for $1.00 This is an outstanding module. I will sit and update it to D20 for my group. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 27] Author : GreyLord Date : 05-14-04 01:31 AM I used to have all the Star Frontiers modules, but it's been so long since I've run any. When we play now we play adventures that I've made. BUT, with all the modules that we played, the favorite that we had, if I recall was always, Dramune Run. It was fun to run and fun to play. Great module. Especially how it all builds to the conflict at the end! Used some of my lesser favorite rules and rulesets at points, but the module itself was really fun! -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 28] Author : beavis123 Date : 05-14-04 05:32 PM Thread Title : I agree I read but never played Dramune Run. I saw it on ebay for $5.00. I liked the modules where the "Sathar" weren't the only threat. I hope to give Dark Side of the Moon a run. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 29] Author : DarthRicker Date : 05-17-04 04:07 PM Thread Title : Campaign Update #5 Last night we picked up with the players befriending the surviving Kurabanda from the pirate attack. He led the players back to his village and they met the chief. The chief informed them that their where three others like their kind living with the Kurabanda but two of them were captured in a raid by the pirates. The third, a vrusk, was still living them. This was how I introduced my friend's son's new character to the group. The chief then provided them a guide to lead them to the pirate outpost. They made it to the outpost with little trouble. They figured out that the fence around the outpost was electrified so they attempted to dig under it. As they were digging a combat robot exited the garage. They mangaged to hold off the robot and get under the fence. One of the humans then deactivated the robot (after taking some damage). They then made their way to the garage and were attacked by the second robot and two of the pirates. They managed to defeat these and this is were we had to stop. The kid has school in the morning. We'll pick up with them trying to make their way through the rest of the outpost next time. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 30] Author : beavis123 Date : 05-17-04 09:01 PM Thread Title : a question How did you handle adventures or campaigns run on civilized, government controlled worlds of the Frontier. Specifically, the use of weapons and armor? In Dark Side of the Moon, on Kraatar, PCs are allowed to carry personal sidearms and melee weapons. I assume that discounts rifles, grenades, and heavy weapons. Should any weapons be concealed? A melee weapon could consist of a stun stick or a sword? Did you avoid the whole issue by deputizing the PCs or having them join Star Law? -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 31] Author : DarthRicker Date : 05-18-04 09:34 AM Thread Title : Carry weapons in the open I haven't read Darkside of the Moon yet, but I have encountered this situation before in Star Wars. If the characters were in a major city, like Coruscant, then they would have to conceal their weapons. If they were in a place like Mos Eisley, they could get away with wearing pistols out in the open but still could not be lugging around rifles and heavy weapons or basically looking like a walking arsenal. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 32] Author : beavis123 Date : 05-18-04 05:19 PM Thread Title : I agree This is one of the turn-offs for alot of people who ever think of playing sci-fi games. Most gamers start with D&D, where it is ok to walk around in full plate with a huge sword. Telling them you have to hide your weapons and you can't wear Armidillo Battle Tank Armor every where you go, get's the response, "why??". Concealed weapons ( lasers) can be deadly. The armor is unnecessary as defenses based on power screens are just as effective, and available at a flick of a switch. Although, not every world has the same rules as you mentioned. The inner reach of Drammune is another haven for crime and criminals or was that the outer reach?? -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 33] Author : GreyLord Date : 05-19-04 02:26 PM I believe it is the inner reach which is home to some rather unsavory characters, and some surprises for those who end up there. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 34] Author : beavis123 Date : 05-19-04 08:37 PM Thread Title : yes Thank you for the information.
