I remember when I was a kid just starting to play D&D. I would go to the hobby store with my mom. I wanted the new hard back AD&D Dungeon Masters Guide. I can still remember her saying, "I'm not paying $15.00 for any book. You'd better save your money." -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 2] Author : beavis123 Date : 03-27-04 09:21 PM Thread Title : You wish $15.00 looks like a bargain today. Hard cover books going for $35 to $45. But, you know what, that is a bargain compared to those MMORPG's sucking $19.00 a month out of you. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 3] Author : Sarta Date : 03-28-04 04:38 AM heh, when I picked up the DM's guide it retailed for 10 bucks. At age 11, I was only able to convince my parents to allow me to buy it by opening a savings account at a local bank (fixed 13.5 percent interest!!!) that gave kids who opened an account a 10 dollar gift certificate to Toys 'R Us. The funny thing to me is that some of my players won't buy books due to them costing too much, but then spend the same amount of money on beer, snacks, and food during just one or two gaming sessions. I have found a lot of the AD&D and D&D items(collectables and current) that I almost never pay more than half of the cover price on ebay. I love this site.:) -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 5] Author : skathros Date : 03-29-04 04:06 PM Why i like e-bay??? Because at least ebay still supports older versions of the game:smirk: -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 6] Author : rogueattorney Date : 03-29-04 04:41 PM Why I like Ebay: Say you want to start playing a FRPG. You get the core rules and 5 modules to get you started: 1e: $59 (DMG, PHB, MM, T1, N1, L1, I1, WG4, according to http://www.acaeum.com/ average U.S. Ebay prices) B/E D&D: $43 (Moldvay Basic, Cook Expert, B2, B4, B7, X1, X2 from same source) 3.5e: $119.89 (DMG, PHB, MM purchased from Amazon.com and first 5 of Goodman Games Dungeon Crawl Classics purchased directly from Goodman.) [EDIT: I don't mean to pick on Goodman, they're just the first module makers for 3.5 I could think of - you could probably pick any 5 3.5e adventures and come up with a similar price.] You'll be paying shipping and handling on all. You'll be paying sales tax on the 3.5 stuff. You'll have to buy dice for whichever edition, so it's a wash. It's actually cheaper to get started in the earlier editions. It's not even close, and if you'll settle for the .pdf from SVGames, it's even cheaper than that. If you don't believe you're getting a MUCH better product, there's actually no financial reason to buy 3.5 stuff. Well you can sure bet those days are gone forever. Why when that original DMs guide finally fell apart after years of use I went shopping on Ebay for a replacement. Inflation has been truly cruel to our poor DMs guide because I had to pay a wopping.........$5 for the new one.........including shipping. Ebay rocks. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 8] Author : Date : 03-30-04 07:24 AM Originally posted by rogueattorney Why I like Ebay: Say you want to start playing a FRPG. Of course, finding players is going to be a problem. You don't need to sell the older systems to me --- I've been a player for more years than I care to count --- but finding enough players to round out your gaming table is going to be so much more difficult if you don't play a relatively current version. I was running a campaign using an edited ODD ruleset and lost a couple players due to people moving away, etc. Replacing players became a major endeavor. I found a couple of grognards who live practically next door and who post regularly on this and other OOP D&D boards but it seemed they would rather wax nostalgiac and lecture the "young ones" about the obvious superiority of older systems than play them --- every grognard turned me down. Now, call me crazy, but I would rather play than talk about it. Today I'm playing twice and month and DMing twice a month using 3e. I'm turning down players and turning down invitations be be a player in other games simply because I don't have the time. Cost of the books, dice, etc., is the last thing I would use to choose a gaming system. Personal preference and a pool of players are at the top of my list. I like 3e and I like older versions of the same game. I run a 3e game with a decided "old school" flavor. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 9] Author : Yorlum Date : 03-30-04 08:01 AM I have the same issues. I'd love to run 1st ed, but let's face it, we're few and far between anymore. To me, 3rd ed is better than nothing. I'm working towards excising some of the more offensive aspects of 3rd ed though, and maybe, over time, I can persuade my cast to try 1st ed. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 10] Author : Thailfi Date : 03-30-04 08:09 AM I guess I am lucky. My group of 4 - 6 guys love 1/e-2/e and don't have even the slightest interest in switching. We all have settled down with families and we have been playing together for almost 24 years so it is doubtful the group will break up and we have a few YEARS of material backed up, so when the 3e players are complaining about having trouble finding people to play their out of date edition, we will still be playing 1/e-2/e. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 11] Author : Yorlum Date : 03-30-04 09:11 AM Originally posted by Thailfi I guess I am lucky. You're darned lucky! My old 1st ed group went munchkin on me and they all want to play 3rd ed power monkeys now... -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Downloaded from Wizards Community (http://forums.gleemax.com) at 05-10-08 08:21 AM.
