Seems I rolled up a Cursed Scroll of involuntary Plane Travel (DMG 1979 edition;Random Treasure Tables: III.B Scroolls 98-00 Cursed : 41-50). Well, instead of figuring out what it was, they just have the Mage go ahead and read it... So I get to make something up on the fly...Decide to send them to Greyhawk, since I have the materials right there anyways, and start looking up things quickly and rapidly. All of them 3rd to 4th level, they aren't really ready for interplane travel, but here they went. Moral of the story: Be sure to double check what you roll up on the Random Treasure Tables and make sure that's really what you want to make available to the players! Now I'm trying to figure out how to get them back (elaborate quest) whilst not disrupting the other campaign I was running, and still make them remember not to read random scrolls they find in a dungeon. What sort of quest do you suggest for these idiot savants? That won't kill them of course. The main problem is money I beleive, I think they could hire someone to get them back...but it would cost an arm and a leg...so what could a mage possibly want that a group of 3rd and 4th level characters could provide...that the mage couldn't provide him/herself first? Luckily the next session isn't until this weekend. I'm thinking about using Jaran Krimeeah from the Valley of the Mage to send them back, and having his desire for them to collect some gold from Skrellignshald, which of course will leave them all cursed with a rotting disease, which should teach them, but give them enough time to try to figure out a way out of their predicament once back on their home plane. Any other thoughts? -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 2] Author : Gandalf_Istari Date : 04-29-04 05:19 PM Well, you could perhaps have a good-aligned wizard send them back to their home plane for free. Allowing an NPC a motivation of "doing a good deed" to help the players out isn't necessarily cheesy, as long as it doesn't happen too much. Perhaps the players would lose a magic item, an attribute point, or something like that, as a result of being transported back. The wizard sending them back could explain that he simply can't get them back without penalty, as the spell that brought them to Greyhawk was cast by a more powerful magic user. Or, you could have an evil wizard offer to send them back, on the condition that he can bind their souls to a particular demon before they get sent back. :smirk: -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 3] Author : Stonebeard Date : 04-29-04 08:34 PM Well I just read that particular entry in the DMG and here's a wrinkle you may not have thought of... there's nothing there that explicitly says the effect is permanent it just doesn't specify that its temporary. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 4] Author : The WarOverlord Date : 04-30-04 05:40 AM Thread Title : Re: Random Headaches Originally posted by GreyLord After all these years in 1e, an old gristled DM still learns new things. Any other thoughts? Would Jaran not care that the Players caught a disease? By association wouldn't he/she catch it too? Mayhaps it be better that the Scroll was a "plant" by the owner of the Dungeon and the little trip to Greyhawk reversible by retrieving a magic Item mentioned on the Scroll/Scroll Case -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 5] Author : Hiryu Date : 04-30-04 05:28 PM And hence, why I NEVER roll on random treasure tables, no matter the edition. Since you are planning on sending them to Greyhawk you could try running them through the Vecna trilogy of modules. Near the end they got some planar travel, so that could fix your need to get the back into your campaign. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 6] Author : GreyLord Date : 04-30-04 07:46 PM I think I'll use that idea, it's actually a great idea!
