I knew I understood how it worked, but then my nephew asked me and--ZAP!--all that knowledge was instantly gone. So I tried looking it up in my PH and DMG, but after two hours I came here and started reading the flames and closed threads and...wait! That's not important! How do you determine carrying capacity for characters in 1st edition AD&D? There's the Weight Allowance column on the Strength chart, and there's the 35/70/105 thing on pp.101-102, and somewhere there's mention of Strength x 10 lbs, and then the fire alarm went off, and the firemen came by, and the police wanted to question me...wait! That's not important either! Encumbrance? How? -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 2] Author : Falstaff the Fighter Date : 05-14-04 04:11 AM Its on page 101 of the PHB. Encumbrance works off the following chart: Encumbrance Movement Reaction and Initiative Normal gear - no bulk (About 35 lbs.)........12' (Quick) ..............normal (Bonuses apply) Heavy gear - bulky (About 70 lbs.)........9" (Lumbering)............normal (No bonuses) Very heavy gear - bulky (About 105 lbs.).......6" (Short trot)...........slowed Encumbered very bulky (105 lbs. +).............3" to 4" (No run).........slowed greatly Strength bonuses modify these guidelines with weight represented by gold piece (10gp = 1 pound). Add or subtract your weight allowance based on strength to each category above (They represent the normal default.) to determine your new limit for each category. The Str x 10 formula is for determing your maximum lifting capability (In pounds.). Encumbrance = Current Encumbrance Category based on what your chracter is carrying, modified by weight allowance. Max Lift = Str x 10 (pounds) or (Str x 10) X 10 (gold pieces) -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 3] Author : Algolei Date : 05-14-04 05:18 AM Ah. So then if I made a chart, it would look something like this: Str.........Normal....Heavy....Very Heavy....Encumbered....Max Lift .3..............0..........35...............70.............70+.............30 .4.............10.........45...............80.............80+.............40 .5.............10.........45...............80.............80+.............50 .6.............20.........55...............90.............90+.............60 .7.............20.........55...............90.............90+.............70 .8.............35.........70..............105...........105+.............80 .9.............35.........70..............105...........105+.............90 10.............35.........70..............105...........105+...........100 11.............35.........70..............105...........105+...........110 12.............45.........80..............115...........115+...........120 13.............45.........80..............115...........115+...........130 14.............55.........90..............125...........125+...........140 15.............55.........90..............125...........125+...........150 16.............70........105.............140...........140+...........160 17.............85........120.............155...........155+...........170 18............110........145.............180...........180+...........180 18/01-50...135........170.............205...........205+...........180? 18/51-75...160........195.............230...........230+...........180? 18/76-90...185........220.............255...........255+...........180? 18/91-99...235........270.............305...........305+...........180? 18/00........335........370.............405...........405+...........180? Is that right? -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 4] Author : diaglo Date : 05-14-04 07:10 AM and str and personal weight also determined how much you could lift, but not necessarily carry over your head. ;) -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Downloaded from Wizards Community (http://forums.gleemax.com) at 05-10-08 08:20 AM.
