LOVE the MSHRPG! I was okay with champions, but three hours to resolve one combat was way too long. MSH is quick and easy. and most of all fun! many gamers want so many variables and options for their characters it begins to be a chore and stops being fun. MSH's detractors always knock the simplicity of the system and tout their convoluted rules heavy systems as the be all end all to superhero gaming. for me, I'd rather roll the dice and bash something than spend all my time tweaking tweaking every last D6 of damage out of the rules. I have been slowly working on adapting the MSH rules to a Pulp setting. one day it shall be done! till then my kids and I play MSH and we use heroclix figures for miniatures, and have a grand old time! -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 7] Author : Solaris Date : 06-22-04 04:25 PM Thread Title : Re: Re: the classic TSR Marvel Super Hero RPG Originally posted by boojiesdad I'd rather roll the dice and bash something than spend all my time tweaking tweaking every last D6 of damage out of the rules. That was another great thing about MSH- great support for the game! powers book, hero and villan updates, supplements on the major teams (X-men, Avengers, Fantastic Four), The "Oh so cool" marvel realms of magic book, lands of Doom campaign set, and a bunch more. in terms of quality and affordability,MSH was one of the most well supported game systems Outside of D&D in the history of RPG's. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 9] Author : Renfaust Date : 06-22-04 10:09 PM Thread Title : Marvel PBEM RPG? I've played MSH in every incarnation of the game and I love them all. I loved the simplicity of just 1d%. The cards made for a fast paced intense battle sequence that was hard to match with dice rolling. Even the newest version has a great deal to offer, it's tough getting used to the stones thing but after awhile it grows on you. It also sheds light on why almost every hero nowadays has a healing factor. http://www.geocities.com/customsmiliesbyswordmaster/inthered.txt -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 12] Author : DmJoeSolarte Date : 06-23-04 12:09 AM Thread Title : Re: Marvel PBEM RPG? Originally posted by Renfaust Is there any interest in starting a Marvel Superheroes PBEM RPG Campaign? I know one person interested....me. We had such a unique way of playing MSH back when I got started. We tried playing the Yellow/Basic boxed set at first. We tried to play it but had a hard time getting into it. We were not creating good hero's, good villains, or good storylines. Then, the blue/advanced MSH boxed set came out. And I was reading STAR BRAND comics when a grand idea hit me..... I went out, bought this new boxed set. And then gathered up all my RPG buddies with my new pitch. "We all read NEW UNIVERSE COMCIS, right?" THey all nod. "Well, let me tell you about the NEW UNIVERSE I am going to create. It is based on right now, July 1986!. It is exactly the way things are right now. Reagan is President. The New York Mets are having an incredible year! It was 101 degree farenheit at noon time today. And, just like today, there were no super heroes...." "But that was today, as the first Super Hero's and Villains are going to appear. And the Heros' and villains...are going to be us!!" The effect was like electricity. My brother, being a Huge Iron Man fan, immediatley chimed in. "I'm Iron Man!! I am the one that creates the Iron Man armor....." I immediately chime in. "I am Doctor Strange. A year ago, I bought what turned out to be spellbooks from a yard sale, and have been studying Magic Ever since...." My friend ryan jumps in "Remember when I went to Norway a few years ago? Well, when I was there, I pulled out the Hammer of Thor....." We all went to work, creating our selves as hero's, And we came up with the idea of making people we did not like or hated in school in real life into our arch enemies. We made Gary Coleman into a Supervillain, Sean Penn, etc, etc into our sworn enemies, as well as people we hated. Man, it was such a blast!!! on another note, my character, Merlin, I actually adapted the 'then' 1st Edition ADnD Players Hand Book Spell LIst into a Marvel Super Hero format. I came up with adaptive rules that could be used to convert an ADnD Magic user or Cleric into a Marvel Super Hero format. To the point that I could use the same character in ADnD or Marvel. I based my 'arch enemy' was THE DUNGEON MASTER, whom at the start was a 10th level evil Cleric, whereas my original starting stats corresponded roughly to a 5th level magic user for original adventuring concept. And of course, during the course of my adventures, as well as becoming an AVENGER, I gradually introduced cults in the service in Los Angeles to Demogorgon, Orcus, Tiamat, and other Demon Lords and Devil Princes from the Monster Manual. I should have submitted it to TSR back then, I bet it would have done well.... -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 13] Author : SnowbearK Date : 06-23-04 02:50 AM And I bet you would have gotten a Return to Sender package... TSR was amazingly notorious for those. If you didn't know someone personally, you got screwed. But seriously, I'm all for a Marvel Superheroes PbEM or PbP. Especially if we're using the UBP. :D Man, I gotta dig out that binder now and reminisce over old characters. Ooooh, to keep things somewhat even, we could use the point-buy character generation from the Dragon article, With Great Power. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 14] Author : DmJoeSolarte Date : 06-23-04 10:26 AM I got two sources to help on that. At http://www.classicmarvel.com/ , they have all the Advanced Marvel Super Hero RPG books in downloadable format there. So catch up time is more then able to happen there. I happen to DM a DragonLance campaign online, at http://www.roleplayinggames.net and they recently opened a SUPER HERO boards there, and I am sure they would be all too happy to host a Marvel Super Hero RPG. I am more then game to go in as a PC or as a GM. Nuts to that TSR would have RETURNED TO SENDER. Perhaps I would have had better luck pitching it to Marvel Comics first, and have them submit it. Lets face it, the ADnD Magic System is probably it's greatest strength, and if Marvel saw a way to launch a new SuperHero whom actually made magic in the Marvel Universe hip enough to sell comics, I am sure TSR would have gone along with it, if only to keep Marvel Comics happy. Oh well.... BTW, my email is gmjoesolarte@yahoo.com if anyone is interested. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 15] Author : DmJoeSolarte Date : 06-23-04 10:35 AM Ooooh, to keep things somewhat even, we could use the point-buy character generation from the Dragon article, With Great Power. [/B] The way me and my friends worked it, we wanted to keep things at first on a 'STreet Level' campaign. As such, while we were 'becoming' Thor, Iron Man, Merlin, etc, we tried to put limitations upon our powers to keep things on the up and up. For Example, the guy that was Thor, he had Thor's strength and Endurance....so we made him start at TYPICAL in Fighting and Agillity and no Weapon SPecialization at first to keep him from doing as much. Similarly, the original Iron Man armor was one of the earlier model suits and as such, was more limited. ANd as Merlin, I essentially was starting as a 5th Level Magic User in the Marvel Universe, with all the limitations that a magic user had back then (No Armor, only a staff or dagger as weaponry, needed all spell components, casting times, Verbal or Somatic components, after a spell was cast, it was burned from memory, needing to study spellbooks and sleep every night) all worked for a while. And as we advanced our campaign, we obviously more and more started to become more powerfull. Among the other things I did.... 1) After reading the DRAGONS trilogy of DragonLance, I started my own parallel, where Takhisis/Tiamat has returned to earth, that the GreenGemSTone Man was walking the earth with his secret and how the Dragon Armys attacked and the Avengers had to defend. 2) I started to hint at times of the "LEgendary Warrior" in adventures dealing with the past and stuff. And eventually, in a DnD Campaign, I did it where my brothers beloved Dwarf Warrior Character, renowned for his demon and dragon slaying abillity was gated out of the party against his will. I did not say why. A few weeks later, Galactus arrived on Earth. The Watcher informed us that on our own, we were not powerfull enough to stop him (being Merlin, Thor, Iron Man, and about 4 other Hero's that made up the Avengers at the time). As Merlin, I mentioned I had a scroll with the 9th level spell GATE upon it, and I showed the other characters tapestries and pottery from Pre-Atlantis era, telling the tales of the LEGENDARY WARRIOR and how he had defeated scores of giants, titans, demons, and dragons. We decided to GATE in this Legendary Warrior. My brother was certain I was talking about Gilgamesh the Eternal from the Comics whom was a West Coast Avenger at the time. Imagine his shock when the "Legendary Warrior" was his beloved Dwarf Warrior Wolfos Dathill, complete with his halfling Side Kick Wee-Hunt, whom led the Avengers to victory over Galactus....... So my suggestion is we follow that same formula, we 'pick' whom we want to be, have our original storylines dealing with how we got our powers and such, leading up to everything else..... -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 16] Author : SnowbearK Date : 06-23-04 02:40 PM mmm...I wouldn't be too keen on that idea personally. I had a lot of fun playing it from 84-88. In the early 90's I ran a pretty successful campaign using Mayfair's DC Heroes RPG. I've also dabbled with other systems (Champions, GURPS Supers, etc.). But for my money, the best supers RPG system I've ever played is the short-lived Marvel Super-Heroes Adventure Game published by WotC in 1998 using the SAGA system. Nothing else has come close to capturing the feeling of reading a comic while playing a RPG. Finally here was a simple, quick game, that didn't devolve into an arms race of stats and power ranks between heroes and villains. This game allowed relatively low-powered characters like Hawkeye and the Wasp to not only adventure side by side with the likes of Thor and Iron Man, but also shine when doing so (just like in the comics). This game allowed Spiderman to give it his all and beat Firelord, yet still be truly challenged by the Vulture or Kraven the Hunter. What made this game so great? Simple innovations to the SAGA system that weren't present in the Dragonlance SAGA system. Innovations like Edge that allowed saavy heroes to pull some clutch maneuvers. Innovations like the Doom Bank that allowed whatever villain you were facing to put fear in your heart and the overwhelming desire to punch his lights out! The game did have some flaws (all games do), but I've never played a supers game that was as much fun, or as true to the source material. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 19] Author : Hand of Vecna Date : 06-23-04 10:41 PM Originally posted by DmJoeSolarte At http://www.classicmarvel.com/ , they have all the Advanced Marvel Super Hero RPG books in downloadable format there. I've always greatly preferred originality in MSHA. Archetypes such as Thor, Merlin, and Iron Man are ok, but why limit yourself to established heroes/gods/etc? Oh, I understand what you mean. Basically, because in our Marvel Universe, there were no Iron Mans, no Thors, etc, the idea was us 'becoming' that person. It was the first time where we actually put ourselves, as is not making a Super Hero whose real name was Joe Schmo, but in this case, I was making Joe Solarte into a real Super Hero. And of course, people we hated were the villains. For example, we decided that the 'kingpin' of Los Angeles Crime Syndicates would be one of our players brother, whom was always getting into drug problems and arrests in real life. And of course, we insisted that his 'main ****' would be his mom..... Which always made it fun to taunt him and play this out at the same time. There would be changes. FOr example, we always had our opening adventure, where we actually gained or started the paths towards becoming Hero's for the first time; it just made everything so much more Epic that it was unreal and is why I have such fond memories of MSH to this day. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 21] Author : DmJoeSolarte Date : 06-24-04 12:45 AM Thread Title : Re: I agree Originally posted by beavis123 That is why prefer Champions and Villians and Vigilantes as you are more likely to make your own characters. It was just too many rules and writings that it took away from the game. For example, I believe SpiderMan would have to purchse a half dozen different powers just to replicate his web shooters. In Marvel Super Hero's, you buy the one power and create Power Stunts. ANd there were many ways to 'expand' upon Marvel's combat status while still keeping it simple. For example we.... 1) Decided that Health would be Endurance times 3 plus Strength. We felt that had a more 'tangible' effect on Players Health. 2) A White was a miss. A Green was a hit, but only up to 33% damage (depending on how well you 'described' your attack). A Yellow would do up to 66%, and only on a Red would you do full damage. Or we sometimes would have a second 'Damage' Die Roll after you hit. More to come later. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 22] Author : DmJoeSolarte Date : 06-24-04 12:49 AM Originally posted by Hand of Vecna No, they don't. Maybe it is because that was literally THE very first time where we decided to put ourselves in as the main characters, as the first Super Hero's on the planet earth, that makes it so memorable. Learning to use your powers for the first time. Going public for the first time, where the press finds out you exist. Thwarting that SuperVillain for the first time. It helped also by making people we hated in real life into our Arch Enemies. FOr example, in Merlin's case (based on myself) I based his arch enemy off this one kid at school that I hated and named him THE DUNGEON MASTER. Or when my brother made the NEW KIDS ON THE BLOCK into SuperVillains and so on. We had just as much fun ridiculing these people as we did anything else. I am not familiar with power stunts, I would like to see how the Advanced version of MSH would make Spiderman I had this discussion before. The thing I liked about Marvel was that the Hero's were the basis for thier abillities. As such, it was easy to create them. For example, Spider Man, one would open the UNIVERSAL TABLE and look at the power rank structures and you make your assessment. FIGHTING- he's a great fighter. No captain america, but damn good. MSH had him at REMARKABLE fighting AGILLITY- SuperHuman level of reflexes and such. That put him at AMAZING. STRENGTH- We know he can lift ten tons, that puts him at INCREDIBLE. ENDURANCE- We know he has super human resilence, but not on the level of the THING or someone like that. INCREDIBLE. REASON- He is a good chemist and student in school. We can put him at around EXCELLENT Reason, with talents to enhance further. INTUITION- Harder to say, he relies on SPIDER SENSE a lot. Still, he is a good sleuth, so Lets put him at Remarkable. PSYCHE- He has faced magic and mental domination in the past. I would not go higher then EXCELLENT, Maybe REmarkable. RESOURCES- FreeLance photographers don't make much. POOR. Powers would be: SPIDER SENSE- Based on how well it serves him, a MONSTROUS ranking at the minimum. WALL CRAWLING- We know he can wall crawl, on glass and other surfaces. According to the power book, this roughly means AMAZING. As far as POWER STUNTS GO, the way it worked was you made an assessment. At the beginning, SPiderMan would only have his WEBSHOOTERS and probably the "Entangling Weapon po wer". Howeve,r if you are willing to spend Karma points, you can develop powerstunts if what you are trying to do seems reasonable and has been done before. For example, in SPidey's case, he was not that goo at Web Slinging at first, but after time, he has gotten good at it. So lets say, you are falling and want to make a parachute out of your webbing. I have seen SPidey do that before, so I as GM would say "OK, Try it". You make the roll. Hopefully it works. It becomes easier to do in the future and after so many times, it becomes a permanent POWER STUNT. In spidey's case, he has earned as permanent power stunts, "Swinging up to 3 AREA/round Entangling weapon Creating a Web Shield Using Hardened webbing to increse punching damage" those would be listed as power stunts, even though he still only has the "WEB SHOOTER" Power. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 28] Author : Amaron Blackthorn Date : 06-24-04 11:53 AM It was a great system. Yours are almost identical ;) I did not try the new one, but looking at it, it just did not thrill me. If I were to organize a Table Top MSH RPG, I would gather up as many HERO CLIX figures for use in the game, but use the old TSR. As far as Spidey's stats, I was just going off my own memory based on how you assess things. That was one of the most brilliant parts of the game, that you had that scale to judge things by. For example.....just to show how it works, lets take as an example, LUKE SKYWALKER. I have my views, based on how you "Assess" a characters abillities on that one chart in the GAME MASTERS Guide and will below, Highlighted out, post what I think Skywalkers MSH stats are. Anyone else whom feels like it, is free to generate on their own, their own stats for Skywalkers and then come back, highlight what I have posted, and see how well it measures up. Just for the record, I am basing these off the beginning of RETURN OF THE JEDI, based on powers we see him use in the films or are hinted at in the novels. Name: Luke Skywalker (public) Occupation: Commander of Rogue Squadron, Jedi Knight Affiliation: The Rebel Alliance, Rogue Squadron, Origon: either Altered Human or Mutant, depending on your own view of the Force. Fighting: Excellent Agillity: Remarkable Strength: Good Endurance: Remarkable Reason: Remarkable Intuition: Amazing Psyche: Amazing Resources: probably no more then Poor if on MSH Earth, unless he joins an avenger. KNOWN POWERS FORCE MANIPULATION: Luke Skywalker is able to tap into the mystical energy field called "THE FORCE". While Luke has the potential for UNEARTHLY FORCE MANIPULATION, Luke currently is limited to using the Force with AMAZING SKILL. The GameMaster can 'advance' Luke's powers during the game, but at the moment, the GM should not advance Luke to MONSTROUS untill he has become a Jedi Knight. Luke has developed the folloiwng Power Stunts with the Force. **Telekinesis of INCREDIBLE skill **Force Push (Telekinetic blast) of Remarkable, can affect all targets in an area. **FORCE COMBAT- Either in Lightsaber Combat or while Piloting a Fighter, Luke can increase his FIGHTING/AGILLITY after a roll on Table 6. This can increse his stat's from +1 to +4 cs in battle. Should he be Stunned, this power is nulified untill he has at least 4 rounds to 'clear himself' and reenter 'COMBAT'. **Pre/Post Cognition- Luke currently has only developed this power at TYPICAL skill. Luke is still new at this power and cannot always differentiate the Past and FUture and Present as well. Should someone in the know (Yoda, Obi-Wan, Doctor Strange) they can better assess what his vision was. **Projective Telepathy- Incredible Skill, but with UNEARTHLY range **Resistance to Energy Attacks- Luke is able to use the Force to absorb energy, from both physical and mystical level. Luke can do so with INCREDIBLE skill. **Leaping= Amazing SKill **Lighting Speed- Amazing, up to 1-10 rounds at most. Mystical ALLY- Obi-Wan Kenobi is able to appear at times to advice Luke in times of need, either thru 'suggestion' or thru manifestation in spirit form. Unique Weapon- Luke carry's the symbol of the Jedi Knights, a Lightsaber. The hilt is constructed of Amazing strength materials. Due to it's small size, any attempt to target the hilt need a RED to successfully target it. When activated, the Lightsaber projects a green blade of energy, approximately 1.5 meters long. The Energy Blade has the following properties: ***The Lightsaber can do Remarkable Energy Damage in Lukes hands. ***Ignores Natural Body Armor. ***Cuts thru materials as if it had UNEARTHLY Str. It can be 'focused' upon non moving targets to cut as if it had ShX str (ie, qui-gon melting thru blast doors) *** When Force Combat is activated, can be used to deflect projected energy attacks with a YELLOW fighting feat. A RED Feat will not only deflect but will also send it back at Luke's direction. TALENTS: Weapon Specilization: LIGHTSABER; Pilot (X-Wing), Repair Tinkering; Leadership Contacts: Rebel Alliance, Yoda the Jedi Master Feel free to post your own take and lets see how close some of us come to each other. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 32] Author : DmJoeSolarte Date : 06-24-04 09:45 PM Originally posted by RobertFisher Because just about every decent super hero idea has been done already. It can be fun to try to make up backgrounds for them. I also like just playing around with HeroMachine & then trying to come up with a character to match the picture. :) I appreciate the praise. Back then, we were sure we were the first people to ever come up with such an idea (making ourselves into the hero's and making people we hated into the villains). While we were AVENGERS, the government forced us to accept three selected hero's of their own were forced upon the AVENGERS at one point, in order to keep our NSA status (of course, Gyrich was the one that ordered that). But the three they were forcing upon us...were based on these 3 people we hated in school. We made them into complete buffoons, border line homosexual inuendos (think Mr Smithers or Mr Garrison...not that theres anything wrong with that now, but back in 1987, it was a pretty big slur), were complete bozos, listened to Michael Jackson and NEW KIDS ON THE BLOCK. The powerfull villain trio of DARTER, SLINGER and ROCKET. Just imagine them in Aluminum, lawn mower engine powered battle armor and stuff like that. Ah, the memories....... -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 33] Author : SnowbearK Date : 06-25-04 12:55 AM Originally posted by RobertFisher Because just about every decent super hero idea has been done already. So, the "there are no super heroes, feel free to copy the comic books" aspect of DmJoeSolarte has a lot of appeal to me. And that's when randomness can slide in. One of the great things about the MSHA system, especially with the UPB, is the ultimate randomness...like hitting Random on HeroMachine. Aside from doing that, as with a PBeM game there has to be some kind of standardization, there's always ripping from different sources. Out of ideas, pick up a history book. What if almost every major world-history assassination was carried out by one person with Serial Reincarnation or Possession? WWI or II (fuzzy atm, sorry) pretty much kicked off with the assassination of an Austrian. Lincoln. Kennedy. Martin Luther King, Jr. Etc, etc, etc.... This one guy has the power of reincarnation, stealth, and precognition -- his precognition is so powerful that he sees waaaay far into the future and knows when the ascension to Paradise is supposed to occur. But he only sees one possible future, and in order for Paradise to occur at the time he sees it, certain people have to die at certain times. He'd make for a hell of a one-on-one game, or alternately, a very twisted anti-hero villain. Don't get me wrong, copying comics isn't a horrendously bad thing, but there has to be a great deal of "originality" in there also, or else you might as well go read a comic instead of playing in one. For instance, in DMJoe's Thor example, the comic book Thor was a lot different from the legendary Thor. If the player took Thor and untwisted parts of the legend from the comic book, maybe leaving out the flying schtick, the outfit, and the paladin-like behavior, then I'd have no problem with the player whipping out a character sheet with Thor written across it. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 34] Author : DmJoeSolarte Date : 06-25-04 01:27 AM I appreciate that, the commetns about the campaign, SNOWBERK. As it is, this is more or less how our THOR developed in our campaign. 1) We first did the origon adventure. In that, this friend of ours was on a solo mission on a trip to Norway. He breaks away from the group when he found a cave. Within, he came under attack by a Fenris Wolf spirit. In the run for his life, Ryan came upon an altar that had Mjolnir on it, surrounded by those whom had tried to pick up the massive weapon and use it vs the Fenris Wolf. Ryan picked it up, and even though he had no idea what he was doing, said the words "BY THE POWER OF ASGARD!" (I know, stolen from HE-MAN, but that was part of his twist) and that 'transformed' him into Thor. As THor he had Thor's body, but none of his fighting skills or none of his knowledge on how to actually use Mjolnir. 2) We started him, to counter for the enhanced str and END, made him start at TYPICAL Fighting and Agillity, making it much more difficult to score hits. We also did a few more things to tweak him out. 3) We had a funny adventure where a team of supervillains (based on Kids at school that we hated) took over the school in a hostage thing. Ryan's character at the time did not bring his hammer to school (and of course, my brothers character IRON MAN did not have his armor). So much of the adventure was my own character (Merlin) doing what he could to cause enough of a delay for Ryan and my brother to sneak away and get home and get their items, even though at that point ,none of us knew what our powers were. 4) Basically, as Thor, things developed. We allowed him more and more access to his other abillities. It was a year before he really knew for sure there was an Asgard and that Loki was out to get him. And his struggle between this 'new life' in Asgard or Life on earth. The seductions of the Enchantress, stuff like that. It was some really fun times and adventures, especially when we started mixing it with LORD OF THE RINGS and DND and stuff. That was sorta the thing, was that in the game, we were always trying to keep secrets from each other at first. Even though my brother and I shared the same room at home, the deal was he had his 'top secret' laboratory in the back yard shed where he tinkered on his IRON MAN armor, wheras I had the tree house as my 'wizards laboratory' where I researched my spells. And none of us had a clue that two houses down, that Ryan was Thor, although my brothers character did build a GOblin GLider and suit for his little brother to be Iron Man's sidekick THE GREEN GOBLIN (who was a hero in our campaign). Or how my best friend was a Green Lantern...... One of the first thigns we did was wrote down all the people we hated in life, from people at school to teachers to people whom had crossed us in real life, etc. These we assigned and then created our Arch Enemies out of them. For example, my brother hated this one kid named Larry and his group of friends. So we made him into THE MELTER (whom was one of Iron Man's first enemies). I hated this guy named Dean , whom was a DnD fiend, so we made him into my arch enemy, THE DUNGEON MASTER. and So on..... Man, the memories. So yes, I would love to get back into this campaign. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 35] Author : SnowbearK Date : 06-25-04 06:46 AM Ahhh, I see then. The mission is to find a hi-tech wonder called "The Kitchen Sink", who disappeared along with some scouts. Name Ideas: Captain Conduit Flypaper Purple Turtle Skunkweed Muskrat Ace of Hearts Cholesteral Man Lucky Stryke Ever play the game Superhero Leaugue of Hoboken? It's going to be like that. This is a new universe, but the heroes aren't going to be the very first heroes. (Only the first PCs) They will also all begin as established heroes, and we'll deal with their origins later. I would be interested as well, providing it was standard game, by that i mean the MSHRPG advanced rules of course but no outlandish settings or over abundance of house rules. I've played in many Play by email games and I've found the most succesful are ones where the setting and rules are familiar. The Kitchen Sink characters will be like the more powerful members on the Mystery Men. However, under the hood... it'll be pure Marvel. DmJoeSolarte: Please send me stats for CYCLONE McGlown. I do reserve the rights to alter your stats initially, and at any time I feel it necessary for game balance, or to match your roleplaying. So don't agonize over your initial stats. If they become problematic, we can fix them. I even can start play with one character making all the decisions for the yet unintroduced "Team". Please send all turns to me in third person, so I can post them as "what really happens". Example Turn submission: CYCLONE says "This is a job for the Cyclone!" Then he pulls the engine start and flies into the air, charging at the high flying Kite Man! (I'll use Karma to hit...but 25 at the max) Example Post result: "Nobody can stop me!" the high-flying Kite Man cackles as he throws electrified keys at the crowd. Then from within the crowd, comes an irish voice "This 'ere is a job fer dee Cyclone!" A motor starts and an aluminum plated man flies into the air, knocking into the high flying Kite Man! "Oh no! A tree!" Kite Man yells as he falls down into a weeping willow. He weeps, "I've been defeated by my own gardener!" Perhaps Kite Man should have given McGown a better tip. I hope the game will be like that... only better. :-) -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 55] Author : DmJoeSolarte Date : 07-03-04 01:20 AM Hero's Name: Cyclone McGlown Real Name: Jason McGlown (secret...even though his last name is part of his hero's name...makes sense, eh?) Occupation: Student, Adventurer, also mows peoples lawn. Origon: High Tech Wonder Affiliation: freelancer Fighting: Typical (battle armor grants +1cs to GOOD) Agillity: Good (battle Armor grants +1cs, to EXCELLENT) Strength: Typical (battle armor grants +1cs, to GOOD) Endurance: Typical (Battle armor grants +3cs to REMARKABLE) Reason: Excellent Intuition: Good Psyche: Good Physical Health:____ (note, in my campaigns, physical health is Endurance times 3 plus strength, it more accurately reflects the abillity to take punishment that people with high str and endurances should have that people without them wouldn't) Mental Health: 40 (psyche times 3) Resources: Poor (he mows a lot of lawns) Popularity: 6 KNOWN POWERS BATTLE ARMOR: All of Jason's powers derive from his aluminum&plastic, lawnmower-engine powered battle armor. The majority of the armor plating is made of Good Strength Aluminum, with the joints made of Poor strength plastic. The Battle Armor provides the following powers/attachments to it. ***Good protection from physical attacks, Remarkable resistance to Electricity. ***Boots have unlockable RollerBlades (allows movement of up to 3 areas/round) ***Helmet has shortwave, police band and local feed television equipment. ***Halogen light built onto helmet, Remarkable Intensity, batteries die after 3 rounds at max intensity, can be recharged by activating engine (See below) Suped-Up LawnMowerENgine BackPack- This is a souped up Lawnmower engine of Jason's own tinkering (done in shop class in school). Activiating the Engine requires a Successfull REASON feat roll (basically, by pulling the cord on the lawnmower, imagine doing it on your own mower at home). Activating it can add the following power stunts to Cyclone McGlown ***Provides a constant source of propulsion while using RollerBlades (no need for endurance feats to keep up pace). ***Can serve as a back up power source via jumper cables built into Suit for other things. ***Cyclone Attack- By upping the power wattage, and setting his Roller Blades pointing sideways, Jason activates his CYCLONE ATTACK. By activating it, which requires a buildup of 1-3 rounds (imagine him starting to spin around in circles and building up speed) before reaching maximum potency. When activated, Jason is able to perform a charging attack against all targets within his target area (imagine him spinning around in circles, out of control, into anything around him). Jason MUST attack every person in his target area (friend, foe, bystander, cats, dogs, etc). He uses the SHIFT ZERO COLUMN to hit, as he has no control over where he goes and does during a CYCLONE attack. However, he does ENDURANCE+1cs DAMAGE to all in the attack zone. Jason may also extend this, using his REASON in the place for FIGHTING to make a second attack against all in his 'attack zone'. The Cyclone Attack can only be done once on 'a full gas tank', meaning Jason will have to refill the engine after he is done. Also, after performing a Cyclone attack, Jason will be STUNNED for 1-10 rounds (double if he did a double attack, as above). Limitations The Lawnmower Engine backpack is so loud that whenever it is activated, it can be heard for about 3 blocks. DESCRIPTION: Without his armor, Jason is your typical 9th grade 135 lb runt. With his armor, it somewhat resembles BOBA FETT's armor, save that there is a back pack sized lawnmower in the place of Boba Fett's backpack, the entire armor is more 'piecemeal' or has that 'put together look', and is no where near as intimidating as the infamous bounty hunter. TALENTS: Jason has taught himself REPAIR/TINKERING. He also is skilled in Malicious Mischief, Prank Calling, Toliet Papering, and Pro-Wrestling Trivia, recieving a +3cs to all feats relating to the above. COntacts: High School Shop class (can get access to their facilities), as well as anyone who's lawn he mows. Enemies: Cyclone McGlown's avowed enemy is the internet troll and crimeboss of Liberty City, BLUEOAKLEYZ and his crime syndicate in Liberty City. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 56] Author : SnowbearK Date : 07-07-04 12:18 AM Well damn! The Kitchen Sink, a famous hi-tech superhero, was chosen by the Boy Scouts as the "most prepared man in America", and a mini-jamboree is being thrown in his honor. However, unknown by the Boy Scouts Club of America, another not-so-famous superhero is also on the roster. Jason McGlown, a.k.a. Cyclone McGlown, has come with his troop to this remote section of Baldy National Forest in Idaho, to help with preparations. It wasn't easy, but Jason snuck his aluminum and plastic, lawnmower-engine powered battle armor along with him. Alone in his tent, Jason uses his helmet's television equipment to catch the local news. It's Youth Group Week at the Keesh Mall, and in addition to the standard bargains and shoppers, there are a number of Young Scientist projects scattered around the mall. The newswoman says that the science fair was sponsored by an unknown internet philanthropist known only as BLUEOAKLEYZ. (Okay DmJoeSolarte, it's time for you to send your first posting.) Still, thank god for the information age. The many benefits that had been given out, not the least of which were Cellular Phones, helped out. Practically everyone whom Jason had encountered, Jason was able to take them aside and give them the same sob story, how he forgot to get someone to take care of his dog, can I borrow your cell phone to make this important call. More often then not, they let Jason borrow the phone. Of course, once Jason had the phone, he would head to the bushes and jump in, and then the fun begins..... Dials 531-7588 Waits for the ring. Female Voice- "Uh...hello?" Jason, changing his voice. "Uh, hey babe. I am so horny right now, I wanna get it on right now..... Female Voice="WHAT?" [i]Jason, acting suprised. "Don't act so suprised ****. THis is the free phone sex number, right? 531-****....didn't you ever notice that is what your phone spells out. But nothing could prepare Jason for the shock when he see's on TV, the Science Fair!. "Damn," Jason thought. "And here I am stuck out here and I....." Pauses when he hears that the unholy, evil Crime Lord/ Internet Troll BLUEOAKLEYZ is involved. "What! Damn! Damn him!!" Jason shouts out, to suprise of many, including the Kitchen Sink Man whom was no doubt in the area. The other campers are a little suprised by this sudden outburst. "It's HIM!! ITS HIM!!! THAT SON OF A ***** spamed me so many times!!! We had so many flame wars on IGN.Com, Sherdog, and PS2 message boards....this is my chance to catch him out in the open... he screams out. "Oh yeah, btw, he is also in charge of narcotics, extortion, smuggling and practically every other crime in the book in the Metro-City area...." Jason says more quietly, clearly not as concerned that BlueOakleyz is a psychotic crime lord as he is about his reputation for starting flame wars on Message Boards. Instead, I am going to have my newly assembled All Star team of SuperVillains there to go on the attack.....Mach1....Mr Trollio, Midunbar...TPMRules23....and of course, myself!. And don't think that the City's other superhero, THe Kitchen Sink Man will be able to stop me either....He said on his own personal homepage that he would be out of town this weekend too! So the jokes on you muther bleeper!! Oh, being gay is biological and not a choice! the thread ends. Jason shrieks out. "He won't get away with this.......he has to be stopped!" -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 63] Author : Renfaust Date : 07-12-04 10:38 PM Sorry DmJoeSolarte, I am not interested in continuing this game. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 64] Author : DmJoeSolarte Date : 07-13-04 12:02 AM Originally posted by Renfaust Sorry DmJoeSolarte, I am not interested in continuing this game. That goes both ways, ask Iltharious, since that was just a parody of the signature he was using. Of course, had I suggested the Secret Service call on Iltharious, would you have been so upset? True. BUt again, that goes both ways, as Iltharious was doing the same thing. It is a constitutionally-protected right to voice your opinion about anyone and suggesting that they might best serve their country by dying is a valid opinion, no matter what the level of bad taste might be. Ah, but the people whom own these message boards don't have to allow either. Also, again, it goes both way's. I did not see anyone upset about Iltharious old signature which did the same thing, so I felt "I know, why not parody it". And like a true liberal, ran when the shooting came back at him. Now, back to the topic at hand... Yes, lets do that. DAMNIT!!!!! I just finished up Herr Doktor Wein, the Master of Ivy and Various Other Plantforms. [/B] What was Herr Doktor Wein? Do you wanna do it here, or at www.roleplayinggames.net? 1. This is Marvel, so the game is rated PG, just like Marvel super hero comics. Fair enough. Depending on what is seen of course. PG-13 would be a nicer place to start but fair enough. 2. Only the Judge controls the villians and other NPCs. Fair enough. I tried to 'keep things on the move', for example, when Cyclone McGlown was talking with Kitchen Sink Man, i a few times had to add in some things to move the storyline forward. For example, the 'percularity's of BlueOakleyz, will get add more to that below. But yes, in the future, I will sit back and only make applications/suplications on my main character directly. 3. Intolerance of age, race, gender, sexual preference, religion or political beliefs will not be... tolerated. Ok, I think I explained this in the PM I sent you, but if not, here I go. There REALLY is a Blueoakleyz, and if you wish, you can track down his shenaningans that he has performed over the last few years around the internet. He has a well earned reputation for being an Internet troll, among other things which I will get to in a moment. He has been banned at IGN.COM, THEFORCE.NET, Sherdog, and a bunch of other places, and is on his way to being kicked out of the Playstation2 forums. I exaggerated absolutely NOTHING and if anything, I actually was toning down his 'post' above from what he has really done. He has often spammed message boards with the the thread called "BEING GAY IS BIOLOGICAL AND NOT A CHOICE" for reason I have absolutely NO IDEA why he is so insistance on the subject. He actually used to keep a Signature that woudl go like this: "I am uncircumsized and proud; I (the word for peforming a certain act upon your self that rhymes with "bait" and "master" combined) every day without remorse. I know that being gay is biological and not a choice. I hate christians. If you can't handle reading this, you can go ****(yes, the fword) because I don't care what you think. These are all just words on a screen" I was not lying about him mass emailing me with his personal attacks against me. He did that back in the Summer of 2000, when I was still new to message boards and actually included my email address in posts. He tried once to register my email address at a gay men's forum, to the point I had to switch ISP's to prevent anything more from happening. So if you thought I was implying anything in the conduct of BLUEOAKLEYZ< I was just paralleling what he did in real life and applying it to the character. As far as the signature I was using , it was in direct response to a very tasteless sig being used by Iltharious, whom wasted little time in droppiong his sig when I threw it back at him. But I think whatever we put in our sig's is our own business, not yours. I want to like the superheroes in my games. I want to root for them, even while planning the villians' next moves. That said, I'd like the next game to take place in the actual Marvel Universe. Only your heroes will be original. And this time, they will all be new heroes... in our Marvel Universe. Sound good? Sounds good to me. Can I get some ideas of what to utilize? -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 72] Author : Renfaust Date : 07-16-04 10:27 PM Thread Title : New Game I'd like to start the new game here. Maybe we'll move to a more official site if the game gets good. I want to start afresh, so there will be no "BlueSunglasses" man in this adventure. It appears there are three interested players posting here. How about a scientist, a stealth expert, and a muscle type? First come, first serve. Post your hero. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 73] Author : DmJoeSolarte Date : 07-17-04 03:15 AM Hero's Name- Kyle Katarn (public) Age: 31 Occupation: Freelance Adventurer, formerly Bothan SpyNet Agent and Rebel Alliance Operative Origon: Jedi Knight Affiliation: currently none, formerly with Bothan Spynet and REbel Alliance http://www.cswu.cz/characters/img/char/kyle_katarn_2.jpg FIGHTING: REMARKABLE (30) AGILLITY: EXCELLENT (20) STRENGTH: GOOD (10) ENDURANCE: REMARKABLE (30) REASON: EXCELLENT (20) INTUITION: REMARKABLE (30) PSYCHE: INCREDIBLE (40) KNOWN POWERS Force Manipulation- Kyle was born with the abillity to tap into and control the mystical energy field called THE FORCE. As Kyle has only recently 'been awakened' to this abillity of his, he is still struggling to learn the gravity and depth of this abillity. Unless otherwise specified, Kyle requires a Successfull Psyche Feat in order to tap into the Force for its many possible effects. So far, Kyle has developed the following Power Stunts: *Lightsaber Combat- When activated, Kyle rolls on the ABILLITY MODIFICATION TABLE. Kyle may add the results to his FIGHTING and AGILLITY scores. When activated and with an active Lightsaber, Kyle may use his Fighting score to block or deflect 'reasonable' energy weapon attacks at him into other directions. *Telekinesis- Currently, this is limited to just POOR strength, although Kyle may manipulate items in a fine tune like manner with his full AGILLITY score in effect. *FOrce Speed- When activated, this simulates the effect of Lightning Speed of AMAZING skill. *FOrce Jumping- Allows one time leap of up to Amazing potential *FOrce Sense- This power is still in it's infancy with Kyle, and the GM should allow very limited use of it. As Kyle has not had any 'increased' training, Kyle is still not used to the Jedi concept of not trusting his regular senses. *Force PUll- Kyle has learned to be able to yank weapons out of the hands of his enemies. Kyle can use his Force skill in a resisted feat vs all in his target area's STR. A successfull roll will allow Kyle to yank any hand held, non secured weapons out of their hands or holsters, but cannot do this to anything larger then a blaster rifle. *Affect Mind- The classic Jedi Mind Trick, Kyle so far has only developed the abillity for VERY limited suggestion, but does so with INCREDIBLE ranked abillitys. Kyle has the potential to learn alot more powers thru his experiences in life and with THe Force, at GM's discretion. Limitations- At the GM's discretion, the Force may be detected via Mutan Detectors, and certainly by the many agents of the Empire in the galaxy. Karma penalty's should be double for Kyle (Jedi's, even new ones should know better). If Kyle abuses that, he runs the risk of being corrupted or consumed by the Dark Side of the Force (GM's discretion). Lightsaber- Kyle has acquired the lightsaber of the renowned Jedi Knight Qu-Rahn. The hilt is constructed of amazing strength steel, and when activated, generates a green energy blade. The energy blade is composed of an unknown energy that is of UNEARTHLY cutting strength. In Kyle's hands, the weapon does REMARKABLE EDGED/ENERGY damage. The weapon can also be set to do just GOOD DAMAGE, but if he does so, the weapon will do that damage, regardless of body armor or personal forcefields. BLaster Kyle also carries a Bryan Heavy Blaster Pistol. Range of 1 area, capable of doing Excellent Damage, or Kyle can charge it for a round to do Remarkable damage to targets in that range. Can be set for stun. Hacking Device Similar to the one carried by Colonial Marines in the movie ALIENS, this device is issued to most non-Bothan agents within that spynet. The Device allows Kyle to hack into security and computer systems with AMAZING ranked skill. As Kyle's own actual knowledge of computers is limited, the Hacking Device has memory which will save information for Spynet Technicians to later analyze. TALENTS- As a skilled trained agent, by the EMPIRE, the BOTHAN SPYNET, and the REBEL ALLIANCE, Kyle has been trained in Martial Arts A,D, and E. He is also skilled in Tumbling, TRANCE, RESIST DOMINATION, and First Aid. Contacts As being recently stranded in the Marvel Universe, Kyle currently has no earthly contacts. At GM's discretion, the spirit form of the Jedi Knight Qu Rahn may appear to Kyle at times to direct and guide him. Enemies Should Kyle be discovered on earth, he will find a huge, sizable number of Bounty Hunters and Imperial Inquisitors interested in finding him. Kyle is wanted by the Empire for his role in the theft of the original Death Star Plans. BackGround Kyle Katarn is not sure exactly what happened. Just a few moments ago, he had mortally wounded the evil Dark Jedi Maw. He was feeling the struggle with the Light and Dark Side of the Force, when he suddently found himself jettisoned thru a space/time continuim into this "Marvel-held world". Unsure of where he is, or whether what just happened was real...save that he knows he holds a lightsaber now, and that his path on the Jedi Path is on it's way. Note Character is roughly based on the computer game DARK FORCES 2: JEDI KNIGHT, right after the duel with Maw. Has already completed DARK FORCES ONE, and faced Yun, Gor, and Pic so far. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 74] Author : gleep Date : 07-20-04 09:04 PM In respect to the original topic: I love that game, still have all my stuff for it. When my friends and I want to play something really quick it's usually Marvel we turn to, for its ease and simplicity. Our favorite team was made up of anti-heros called Omega. They were basically the last resort. Rather powerful and tended to kill their opponents. Since that meant a loss of all karma, they didn't advance much. :D --gleep -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 75] Author : Moscone Date : 08-19-04 06:27 AM Sadly, I traded in all my MSHRPG stuff. My original gaming group moved on, and my newer group wasn't overly interested as hardly any of 'em read comics- but 2 of them were interested, and we started a Midnight Sons campaign, when those titles and Spawn were growing in popularity, and we all had our own characters, with Ghost Rider, Blaze, Morbius, Blade, King, Drake, Montessi, etc. as NPCs- and we all took turns GMing. Our adventures were separate from the Midnight Sons stories, and yet connected- we battled a lot of Lilin. My friend Bob made Chalace, a fallen demon prince who rode a fiery Roman chariot drawn by Nightmares, and wore Centurion armor. I had a big hulking demonic character who rode the NY subway because he thought driving in cars was unsafe, and always got into brawls on the subway. Funny thing, the MTA never barred him from riding the train over it... Ya, Marvel was fun. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 76] Author : DmJoeSolarte Date : 08-19-04 10:32 PM Sounds like you had fun and that is what the MSH from TSR was all about. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Downloaded from Wizards Community (http://forums.gleemax.com) at 05-10-08 08:19 AM.
