Thread Title : Helmets in Combat & Tactics

There is a discrepancy between the description of the Open-faced helm and the table of helmets in regards to the penalties to surprise.

I have not found any errata to correct this.

The helmets table (pg. 128) states that an Open-faced helm has a -1 penalty to surprise, but the description of the Open-faced helm (pgs. 149) doesn't.

Should the Open-faced helm have a -1 penalty to surprise or not ??

Personally, I'd give it a -1 simply since there is a little hearing impairment.  A little harder to hear those thieves closing in for the backstab.

I would merely because it mentions it beforehand in the book. The description (if I remember) pretty much tells you history and use, no?

The description of the Close-faced helm states that it "can limit vision and hearing. In situations where field of view or clarity of hearing may be important, the DM can impose a -1 penalty to surprise checks . . . "

The description of the Open-faced helm states that it "only moderately compromises vision and hearing." Without mentioning any penalty to surprise checks.

However, both helms list a -1 penalty to surprise in the table of helmets.

Well, the closed face helmet penalty seems right. I think with the open face helm the DM can choose if circumstances offer that penalty or not, due to it saying "moderately comprimises...hearing".

Pretty much up to the DM.
