I was thumbing my way through my books and I saw that Monks were pretty cool. Atleast, the one from the Player's Handbook (the one with the Idol on it). The one in the tome of magic seems lamer than a too much ridden horse. Why did they make two of 'em? -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 2] Author : RobertFisher Date : 11-29-04 11:50 AM The PHB you reference is original AD&D, i.e. 1st edition. The Tome of Magic is (to my knowledge) a AD&D2e (2nd edition) book. The 2e PHB didn't include the monk. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 3] Author : failhelm Date : 11-29-04 02:12 PM 2nd ed. also butchered the Monk up pretty bad. Originally the Monk wasn't even included until later, after plenty of people complained. I understand that the original 1st ed. Monk was re-printed in one of the Cleric/Priest source books for 2nd ed. P.S. Tomb of Magic is definitly not 1st ed. in any case. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 4] Author : caeruleus Date : 11-29-04 02:24 PM Yup, the monk was a character kit in The Complete Priest's Handbook for 2e. It was basically a cleric (with some modifications, eg, more martial) who could specialize in unarmed combat (punching, wrestling, or martial arts). Personally, within 1e, I preferred the monk from Oriental Adventures than the one from the PHB. ... There was a monk in the Tome of Magic?? -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 5] Author : failhelm Date : 11-29-04 03:59 PM Agreed, the OA Monk turned the class into a whole new can of whoopass and still managed to increase balance. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 6] Author : Nifftin Date : 11-29-04 07:37 PM Thread Title : Fooled ya Well, it's seems that I was mistaken, the monk is in Spells and Magic. How is the OA monk? More similiar to the first edition monk? -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 7] Author : failhelm Date : 11-29-04 08:19 PM Similar yes, but really re-worked to fit into the OA world. In fact the OA book suggests that DMs no longer allow monks in Western worlds, but I still do. The real value is the refined martial arts rules, and powers, it really makes any martial artists powerful, but the monk especially because of the free stuff they get. In either case the OA book is, in my never humble opinion, worth it for the Monk & martial arts systems alone. Keep in mind you also get more spells to leak to players. Or ideas for spells to make if your a player. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 8] Author : Wyrmbane Date : 12-04-04 04:25 PM I prefer the monk out of Dragon better. Best one (IMO) that I've seen so far. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 9] Author : caeruleus Date : 12-05-04 05:20 PM I prefer the monk out of Dragon better. Best one (IMO) that I've seen so far. Are you referring to the one that went up to level 21, had d6 HD, and all that? From issue 43 or 45 or somewhere around there? Yeah, I once played one of those monks. It was cool. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 10] Author : failhelm Date : 12-06-04 12:53 AM Are you referring to the one that went up to level 21, had d6 HD, and all that? Monk is my fav class next to Magic-user Which issue I have the electronic 1-250 issues. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 11] Author : Wyrmbane Date : 12-06-04 09:32 PM Issue #53, or Best of Dragon Vol. 4 IIRC. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 12] Author : failhelm Date : 12-06-04 09:47 PM Issue #53, or Best of Dragon Vol. 4 IIRC. thx bunches and oats -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 13] Author : caeruleus Date : 12-07-04 02:39 PM Issue #53, or Best of Dragon Vol. 4 IIRC. That's it! I got it confused with the archer class, which was issue 45, and another player had one in the same campaign. As I recall, they were both in Best of Dragon Vol. 3. (But clearly, my memory isn't the best thing to follow here. :D) -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 14] Author : Wyrmbane Date : 12-07-04 09:07 PM My memory, not yours, slipped. Best of Dragon Vol. 3, page 53. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Downloaded from Wizards Community (http://forums.gleemax.com) at 05-10-08 08:16 AM.
