Having the Fighter-part acquired from the Underdark and the Ranger from the surface world. Plus IIRC AD&D had some funky multiclass combinations available to them(Much like 3e/v3.5 nowadays) -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 6] Author : GreyLord Date : 12-30-04 05:45 PM I have him listed in two books as well. One states that he was a 12th level ranger...the other states that he was a 16th level Ranger. Interestingly enough, I believe I figured out his # of attacks and they didn't add up. I think he got 3/5 attacks per round, plus 1 for two weapon fighting which would equal 4/5 attacks per round. However, with the bracers of speed wouldn't that make it 8/5 attacks per round or would it make it so that he would get 6/5 attacks per round or perhaps even 5 attacks per round, but because he has two weapon fighting give him one more attack...so at least 6 attacks per round? Sorry if that sounds confusing...just trying to cover the math at all the different angles it could be covered. I came up with 6 attacks per round instead of 5. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 7] Author : Torack Date : 12-31-04 04:52 AM The biggest problem with Drizzt is the fact that the stats don't necessarily add up to the character described in the books...AFAIK even some of the official material released on the Forgotten Realms gets overlooked in the books, although I can't recall any precise events. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 8] Author : GreyLord Date : 12-31-04 12:46 PM I sometimes thought that perhaps RA Salvatore made some cheese characters and couldn't equate them with how D&D is really done by the rules...hence the problems. In reality, Drizzit got (at level 12) 8 to 16 attacks, maybe up to 32 attacks, due to having 2 scimitars of speed (2x2x2=8) plus bracers of defense (8x2 = 16) and then perhaps a ring of speed? (16x2 = 32)...just a thought... And Wulfgar got some exceptional strength beyond normal (all that training and all giving him either an auto 18/00 or even some additions beyond to a 19 or 20 str) plus some additional attacks, and one can't forget the Warhammer that always returns to his hands...I'd imagine it would have some interesting enchantments there... Bruenor went above the normal allowed Cleric/Fighter levels and hence broke the rules there... Though I don't have any thing that I can see that would break the rules with Cattiebrie... Of course all this is complete and utter speculation on my part...no idea if it was even ever considered, just looking at the differences between how the characters are portrayed in the earlier books (as opposed to the more recent books like 1000 orcs) and their effects. It would explain why he would try to tone it down for their stats in the rules...but had some very odd discrepancies which didn't agree with some of the things one would read in the novels. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 9] Author : Torack Date : 01-01-05 11:08 AM From what I gather, most authors don't really have a clue about the D&D rule setting in which they supposedly write. Which explains how Drizzt got to be the way he is. They stick to their high-fantasy culture gimmick, maybe look through the odd monstrous manual if they run out of things to toss in the way of their hero, and when the going gets tough, bail out and have some unexplained event save their hero and nuke everything else. Authors are weird like that. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 10] Author : Wyrmbane Date : 01-01-05 12:32 PM Check out "Hall of Heroes" and "Heroes Lorebook". IIRC, he's got different stats in each book. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 11] Author : RaspK FOG Date : 01-02-05 01:35 AM Furthermore, in the Menzoberanzan boxed set, he was given different stats as well - namely he keeps his weirdly-overpowering-and-supposedly-built-for-balance-reasons-but-who-cares-since-he-can-kill-quite-about-everyone stats that allowed him to kill one if your to-hit roll was good enough and so on, PLUS weapon specialisation [I don't remember if he had mastery as well], cause he initially was a fighter; yup, in Menzoberanzan he is a 17th-level fighter (if my memory plays no tricks on me)!! -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 12] Author : Sam Lamander Date : 01-03-05 03:53 AM According to my 2nd Ed. Forgotten Realms sourcebook, he's a 16th level ranger, but in an adventure written by R.A. Salvatore and his party members, he appeared as a 17th level ranger. And since the adventure was supposed to be for level 4 to 6 characters, indeed, he could kill anyone anyone he wanted... -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 13] Author : Toron Relg Date : 01-05-05 01:59 PM I recall Salvatore stated he deliberately made one facet of one character in each of his books above and beyond game PCs (Wulfgar's 19 STR was for The Crystal Shard, Drizzt's number of attacks/Fighting skill was for Homeland are the specific examples he used iirc) and didn't care if someone came along later and statted them out for the game and they broke the rules (Human with 19 STR, etc.). Other than his super "Critical hit" power (added in the write up for the Menzo boxed set), and his ever increasing ability scores, Drizzt was legal in 1st ed. In 1st ed, a 19 Dex let you fight with 2 weapons without penalty ( Deites and Demigods, entry for Moonglum) and 2 weapon fighting was provided for in the DMG. Unearthed Arcana provided for Drow as PCs (allowed to be rangers) and the funky way of rolling stats Drow used in Fiend Folio made 20 Dex possible. Drow also were listed as naturally ambidextrous (Field Folio), and the Entry in UA specifically gives them the ability to "fight with 2 weapons without penalty, provided each weapon may be easily weilded in one hand." And finally, Unearthed Arcana let Rangers specialize. I think that in statting him out they raised his Dex to make him more special, and not just another pc, at least at first. His later versions changed everything with the whim of the person writing the book. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 14] Author : Xx Spider xX Date : 01-09-05 11:26 PM As of the Forgotten Realms - Heroes Lorebook(1996) Drizzt Do'Urden was listed as a 16th lvl Ranger. If you are running a current Realms game, I would suggest the addition of a number of levels(JMO: 23-24). -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Downloaded from Wizards Community (http://forums.gleemax.com) at 05-10-08 08:15 AM.
