I was looking into trying out 2e, and I know I can pick up anything I need relatively cheap, so the only remaining question is this: what books are required to play/DM in 2e? -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 2] Author : WizO_Paradox Date : 01-07-05 11:15 PM The same required for the current edition: PHB, DMG and MM. From there, there is a huge option of game worlds to choose from. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 3] Author : shadowelf Date : 01-09-05 07:31 AM In 2e there are different sets of monster books. The original set was Monstrous Compendiums - loose leaf sheets in binders. I think there were 15 sets, many for specialised settings (FR, Al-Qadim, Ravenloft etc). Later came Monstrous Manuals ie books, of which I remember seeing 4. You only need one or the other and only one or two of either. Have a good look to see what's inside before you buy if you can. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 4] Author : Xx Spider xX Date : 01-09-05 11:10 PM Agreed. All you need is the DMs guide, Players Handbook and Monstrous Compendium. I would suggest the last large hardback compendium released(black or white cover. 384 pgs w/600 monsters). And of course your dice: d20 - d12 - d10 - d8 - d6 - d4 and I would suggest a d10 percentile die. Beyond that, if you find it to your liking..I'd be more than happy to make further suggestions in the future. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 5] Author : RobertFisher Date : 01-10-05 12:16 PM Hmm...2e put almost all of the system into the PHB... To play: No books. Though the PHB could be handy. To DM: Either the PHB & a module or the PHB & a monstrous thingy. If really pressed, you could get by with just the PHB. While the DMG can--of course--be useful, I think magic items would probably be the most missed feature if you didn't have it. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 6] Author : WizO_Paradox Date : 01-10-05 06:33 PM Personally, I'd go for the Monserous Manual rather than the Monsterous Compendium. The compendium was a 3 ring binder, and if you want your monster pages to last, you've got to tape the holes or the Paradox Solution. (Laminate every page.) -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 7] Author : Wyrmbane Date : 01-12-05 01:56 AM AFAIK, there was the Monstrous Manual and 4 Monstrous Compendium annuals, not including one Monstrous Compendium Appendix for Mystara. The manual is a black or white covered hardback book, the others are the supplement type books. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 8] Author : failhelm Date : 01-20-05 01:38 PM Your best bet is to just play 1e :) No seriously, everyones right, its the same basic books, plus some monster stuff. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Downloaded from Wizards Community (http://forums.gleemax.com) at 05-10-08 08:19 AM.
