I have wandered into this forum from somewheres else. For whatever reason, My interest in RPGs has rekindled after about 8 years of binge drinking and womanizing. I am ready to return to being a D&D geek. I used to play AD&D 2e almost exclusively, but I started out on "the red box" back around 16 years ago, and MERP, Twilight 2000, Car Wars and others I have been known to play and GM. Basically, I am waaaay out of the loop. After a certain publisher ruined gaming for me with card games, I lost all interest. Now there is this d20 deal out (what the crap is it?) and AD&D is now D&D 20X6 or 3.5 or XP or whatever, I am really reluctant to go out and spend all kinds of hard earned dough on new systems. (especially when I had so much fun with the old stuff) I found a site to pay to download the moldy oldies, and have started doing so. How many others are out there like me who can get down with the "red box" and have some fun? I am sure I will wander over to the Greyhawk page and do some posting there too, because I can't stand the Realms. Am I in the wrong mindset? wrong place? Is this a convention of "younger than me, with the attitude of latest and greatest?" I hope I am not the only person here who remembers Snarf. (and when snufalupagus was part of big bird's imagination) Rich -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 2] Author : RobertFisher Date : 03-12-05 08:11 AM I've played the latest edition of D&D (3e) since it was introduced. I will still play it, but I don't DM it anymore. I prefer the Basic & Expert sets c. 1981. Luckily, I'd kept all my Basic/Expert, AD&D, & AD&D2e stuff. (& I've started picking up things I never had, as well.) I'm currently running a classic Traveller campaign. If you like the older games: second-hand bookstores, ebay, & the sticky thread in this forum are your friends. Even if you don't have the old books anymore, it can be less expensive to buy them 2nd-hand than to buy the new books. There's also the Castles & Crusade role playing game from Troll Lord Games (http://www.trolllord.com/). It's a new game that tries to capture the spirit of the old games. Best of all, TLG is publishing Gary Gygax's Castle Greyhawk under the name Castle Zagyg for the C&C system. (Though it should be easy enough to use with classic D&D or AD&D.) Besides here, another place to find fans of the older games is Dragonsfoot (http://www.dragonsfoot.org/). There's a Twilight 2000 forum at the Citizens of the Imperium (http://www.travellerrpg.com/cgi-bin/Trav/CotI/Discuss/ultimatebb.cgi). Marc Miller's Far Future Enterprises (http://www.farfuture.net/) has a reprint of Twilight 2000 on the market. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 3] Author : I'm Batman Date : 03-12-05 10:07 AM Welcome, snarfalupagus! Another drunken womanizer returns to the fold, eh? Am I in the wrong mindset? No. wrong place? Nope. Is this a convention of "younger than me, with the attitude of latest and greatest?" Oh hell no! I'm 40. :) And the older stuff is still the better stuff. Lots of people abandoned the old stuff for the new stuff, and lots of people didn't. Some play both. Some mix 'em. We try not to argue, but sometimes the editions don't engender love amongst the different-game-preferring board members. (We have occasional flamefests. ;) ) I hope I am not the only person here who remembers Snarf. And Wormy. Don't forget Wormy! (and when snufalupagus was part of big bird's imagination) :( Big Bird doesn't imagine Snuffleupagus anymore? That's so sad! What does he imagine now--ninjas and pirates? -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 4] Author : WizO_Paradox Date : 03-12-05 10:59 AM Welcome to the boards. I miss Snarf. And Wormy. A quick heads up on this board: It's NOT a place to bash d20/D&D 3e. It's to talk about OOP. :dice: -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 5] Author : snarfalupagus Date : 03-12-05 11:37 AM A quick heads up on this board: It's NOT a place to bash d20/D&D 3e. :dice: I wasn't. I won't bash anything that I don't have any experience with. I will seldom bash anything that I DO have experience with. With all the other hobbies (the wife says TOO MANY) that I have, I have a huge distaste for flame wars on forums, and with the busy life I lead, no time for them. I am quite out of the loop as I said, and I certainly don't want to step on toes my first day here. Thanks for the welcome, And thanks to RobertFisher for the linky poos, and to Batman for letting me know I am not alone. That is going to be a pain...being alone. I am 3 hours away from the guys I used to game with, and haven't talked to them in about a year. I was considering pbem games, or with all the forums and stuff, are there groups that do IM gaming, or forum gaming? Rich -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 6] Author : weasel fierce Date : 03-13-05 05:24 AM Hey, good luck with it all. For more info on older D&D editions, google for Dragonsfoot. Its an excellent little forum for OOP gaming. Amazon is an amazing place for old AD&D books by the way. Particularly 1st edition books crop up with amazing frequency -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 7] Author : WizO_Catoblepas Date : 03-13-05 11:37 AM Welcome to the boards. Personally, I like to play all versions, but that is just me. As for the population of the boards, there is a sizable population that is within the late 30's to early 40's age group. In fact, when I went to GenCon the last few years, it shows. Hence, there were a few of us that learned to play with the Holmes Basic Edition and 1st Edition AD&D. At any rate, enjoy your stay. :) -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 8] Author : Stonebeard Date : 03-13-05 01:48 PM In the realms of Dungeons and Dragons I haven't played or DMed anything newer than 1st edition... okay I played in one second edition game but thats all I swear. I do however play/gm d20 star wars. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 9] Author : I'm Batman Date : 03-18-05 01:52 AM :( Uh-oh, WizO_Paradox edited my post, and I don't know why or what was changed. A quick heads up on this board: It's NOT a place to bash d20/D&D 3e. :dice: I wasn't. It's possible Doxxie directed that at me, although I'm not sure--don't remember doing the bashing, but if he edited me it was for a reason. I, uh...I bash stuff sometimes.* 'Til now, I thought I always knew when I was doing it. (So this is old age, hmm? Meh. Guess it's not too bad.) Thanks for the welcome, And thanks to RobertFisher for the linky poos, and to Batman for letting me know I am not alone. I'm not "Batman." Someone else is "Batman." I'm "I'm Batman." ;) It's the greatest board name I've ever had on any board--every time I arrive here, I'm greeted with the message, "Welcome, I'm Batman." :D (Heh heh, "linky poos"....) *But I bash and I smash because I love. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 10] Author : weasel fierce Date : 03-18-05 02:01 AM Hence, there were a few of us that learned to play with the Holmes Basic Edition and 1st Edition AD&D. At any rate, enjoy your stay. :) I just lost an ebay bid for a Holmes box set :weep: -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 11] Author : kengar Date : 03-18-05 09:07 AM I just sold my Holmes set over on DF. I was slightly surprised at how popular they are, considering how few people on the OOP boards seem to play it. I guess some of the market for Holmes is nostalgia. It's the set I first used, back just before the 1e books were released. I still love that cover art. :) -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 12] Author : WizO_Catoblepas Date : 03-18-05 04:55 PM I bought my Holmes version on [insert online auction site here :) ] for like $20. Honestly, though I enjoy the game, the major reason why I have it is due to the nostalgia. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 13] Author : snarfalupagus Date : 03-18-05 08:57 PM I'm not "Batman." Someone else is "Batman." I'm "I'm Batman." It's the greatest board name I've ever had on any board--every time I arrive here, I'm greeted with the message, "Welcome, I'm Batman." Every time I see your SN I think of that commercial with the football player who got knocked out..."where are we?" "we are in New York" "who am I?" "You are the coach!" "who are you?" .........."I'm Batman...." Nevermind. Hmmm....get back on track before this gets locked..... I about punched a guy at work the other day because he said "Basic D&D sucks." I had the same problem with the group I used to regularly play 2e with, because they couldn't get past the lack of rules. (well, less complicated rules) I like ablility to make desicions in regards to the way rules are laid out, and "extras" that all the later editions of AD&D had pre programmed. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 14] Author : weasel fierce Date : 03-19-05 01:46 AM basic / classic D&D is the smoothest, simplest and most userfriendly (and newbie friendly!) incarnation of the game, to date. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 15] Author : Wyrmbane Date : 03-20-05 09:15 PM I started with Basic (red box), did a little Expert (blue box), but quickly ended up with 1ed AD&D. Made the switch to 2ed AD&D when it came out (had to read a little first). Never tried 3ed, although I did try to convert my character using their cheezy, lame Conversion Book pamphlet. The older stuff was better, IMO, so I stuck with it. I don't care what edition you're playing, if it's 2ed or earlier, I can play it. Some things I prefer more than others, but if a group is good, OD&D/1e/2e I don't care. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 16] Author : TheDungeonDelver Date : 03-20-05 11:10 PM Welcome, Snarfp. AD&D'er here although Moldvay basic and expert, as well as Holmes Basic and OD&D hold a special place in my heart. Stick around here but do join up over at Dragonsfoot.org, too, if you haven't already! -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Downloaded from Wizards Community (http://forums.gleemax.com) at 05-10-08 08:15 AM.
